I have looked around the forums using search trying to figure out what programs I can use to open DirectX files (.X) I have downloaded various programs, but they either have nothing to do with direct X or ONLY export .X models.

(Some) PROGRAMS IVE TRIED.

-Gmax
-3ds Max
-Blender

*I would prefer not to have anything to do with "MilkShape", but if it's the only program that works, I'll look into it some more...

,Thanks

You need to use Fragmotion to import animated X file and export in milkshape format so you handle it in milkshape

however milkshape is very simple to use ,blender is a great and free program but it does not work right with x files

see the guide

You should look into Milkshape. Yeah it can be a bit buggy at times, but it's a real workhorse, and handles everything you need, to work with FPSC. It's what I use.

Just my opinion, Good Luck!

I didn't like it at first either, but you'll get the hang of it.
It's awesome once you get used to it. (and its very affordable)
Get FragMOTION too though dude.
You need that to retain the animations because MilkShape only imports X meshes without animation.
So, you import your X files (like stock characters) into fragmotion and you can export from that as a milkshape file. (.ms3d)
That way you can load your X files into MilkShape 3D, and still retain all the animations.

It really comes down to which interface you feel comfortable with. (some are customizable)
But FragMOTION and MilkShape 3D are the dynamic duo when it comes to modeling for FPSC.
They are not free, but at $35 and $25 bucks, its a nice package for only $60.

You can use any 3d modeling package that you like, just find 1 that you feel comfortable with that exports to obj and you can rig them in Characterfx(freeware) that will export .x file highly compatible with FPSC.

Here is a list of 3d modelers and resources:

Personally I use AC3D.

Pro: very simple and intuitive still very powerfull. Easy for building models and segments and texture them

Cont: it does not handle animation, not free.

I use AC3D as well, have been for a few years.

I find that it's exelent for modelling, very few things it cant do.

Only problem I have with it is that it can't animate.
