What would be the easiest way to model, lets say a gun? At the moment, I use a plane and extrude the plane after I finished, but is box modelling quicker and more convenient? I'm new to modelling so I need some tips...

It's a matter of personal preference really, each person will have their own ways of modeling, I tend to box model guns and most mechanical things. Seeing as they are usually more box-shaped. But for humans I poly model or cylinder model.
But everyone has different ways that work for them.

To be honest there is no hard and set rule, what ever works best for you, In time you will develop your own preferences.

Be patient, dont expect to produce outstanding models immediatly, it takes time. The best advice I can give, which was given to me, spend as much time looking at what you are modelling as actually modelling. It does seem a really silly bit of advice but if you apply it you will see a huge improvement in your work.

The greatest thing about producing models is that we work with polys, if you mess up it usually can be very easy to it right.

I give ip with thos baner fing as it never seems to work for me. I woll now stop wasting mu time.

my first gun i used a cylinder
Its really depends on you and on the model but keep in mind that a cylinder is going to have a higher Poly count as a cube
my first gun model was ww2 rifle, I found the cylinder to be easier because if the shape, but with a m16 i found it easier to use a cube

but i suggest to use the monkey if your using blender

i use vertex modeling. make a shaped plane of the very base of the object then extrude it then add the features depending on the object. but this is for mechanical stuff. i have no experience with living things.

That's not really vertex modeling is it? That's poly-modeling. Vertex modeling is when you make an outline of connected vertices and extrude faces from those and such. At least from what I've heard, I've never done it.
