Hi,
First off i am a noob, so my apologies.

I want to know something very simple but i cant find it by reading the product descriptions. Basically, its what is the point of a "Game Engine" - here is what I think based on the videos at Leadwerks.com

If i were to make a map/level/world (eg a room with walls and a chair), in 3D World Studio, and then i add textures to it (eg so the chair is brown and the carpet is blue) the graphics would look pretty dated as everything is flat and boxy. THEN if i buy the leadwerks Game Engine, do i "put" (somehow) the flat and boxy map i made into the Game Engine, and then my room will look real, with good graphics, like the example: http://leadwerks.thegamecreators.com/

Also, it would add phsyics i know.

Thanks for any help!

the game engine renders 3d objects in 3d coordinate space. they usually add graphics and physics to the objects but it's not the definition of a game engine.

Thanks for the reply, so is my understanding correct - that i can make a game in DBPro, with kind of average box graphics and then buy the leadwerks "game engine" and render all my graphics nicely?

No. Your graphics are your graphics. Fixing the flat-and-boxiness would be fixed using a program that smooths things out, or by you doing it yourself. As far as I know, no game engine simply...makes things look better. Except maybe with anti-aliasing.

You're understanding is incorrect.

Leadwerks engine uses shaders applied to models to make them appear more detailed (through the use of normal/bump maps).

DBPro also can use shaders to make models appear more detailed.

Now some people dont use shaders in their games, either because they are targeting users that cant use them (older video cards) or for the fact that using shaders has a performance impact on games (especially for non-brand-new computers).

It also depends on how well the models are made that can make them appear great, or so-so. So basically it depends on the experience and skill of the modeler.

With Leadwerks, the games made with it can run faster than games made with DBPro, mainly because with Leadwerks you code with C/C++ or C#. But again, sloppy coding with both DBPro or Leadwerks and you'll see poor performance.

So again, basically it depends on skill and understanding of the coder.

Thanks Jetherit and Quantum Fusion,

That was very helpful - i now understand that the leadwerks 2.0 engine is an alternative to DBPro, not a tool to be used with DBPro.

Since i just forked out $140 for DBPro i think i will stick with it for a while.

Im going to research rendering and shaders to see what they do and how i can implement them into my models for DBPro.

Thanks again,
Siddy.
