Milkshape or Wings 3d are good for beginners, but I don't know if Wings exports to X...

I had that same question a while ago, and I use blender now. Normally, a professional game maker would say to use 3DS Max, but a lot of us can't afford it. So, what I did, was go to blender's website and clicked on the galleries, movies, and tutorials. Many of the pictures in the gallery looked very realistic. You can use character FX to animate the model with bones or just animate it in blender. You should check out the stuff at their website

http://www.blender.org

At the top there are links to the galleries, tutorials, and other stuff.

And here's the link for Character FX:

Venge: he said free right? MS3D isnt free=P

Wings 3d is quiet good,AND it SUPPORTS X

even though Milkshape 3d (MS3D) isnt free, it is cheap, around 20$ and it is rly easy to learn, but, it only supports tris

it gives to option to manually place out verts and bind tris, wich is an amazing option imo =P

many ppl says Blender is good, i dunno if its easy to learn BUT i know one thing, it is powerfull!: this is all done in blender! http://www.bigbuckbunny.org/

good luck!

I use blender, look at my previous threads in this section for some of my work. At first it was a (really) steep learning curve, because the UI can be unfriendly, however after about 2 days of learning I'm finding it more intuitive and I'm able to create functioning models.

I'm not looking to join any amateur teams, nor do I take requests.

Anim8or is very simple but it only exports to .vtx, .c, .an8, .3ds, and some other non compatible file... but it's easy to learn and great for beginners

Quote: "model making"

Step One:
First off, you need to select two of the most beautiful people on earth who suffer from no physical ailments(mild mental ailments are fine). Twist their lives so that their paths constantly cross. Eventually they will notice each other, this is when you send both of them notes calling each other on a date. Manipulate the date and the ones that follow so they are perfect for each other in every way. Remember to throw in a little debate and contradiction every now and again to keep conversation exciting between the both of them because we all know imperfection is perfection. You will find the best things they will love in their partner is the little things that make them imperfect, make them stand out from the crowd.
If the date fails, retry with two new subjects.

Step Two:
Brew for 5 years, keeping track of sexual conduct as not to produce a child to early and making sure they are both in love(as we know, people in love produce the best looking offspring).
If a child is brought in early, or the love isn't true enough in your eyes, its optional to carry on but recommended to return to step one

Step Three:
Force unprotected intercourse between the pair of then (Protip, using a pin to push through a condom is the best way, unnoticeable and almost always effective. Since the two of them were ready the child will not be planned, but will still be wanted.
Step Four:
Let the loving family do all the hard work and raise the child as best as they can, using this method is optional but it is cheaper and usually easier for yourself.
Make sure the child is pure and without physical ailments, in this case its best to terminate the child and return to step three

Step Five:
Throughout the childs first 10 years the child must be shown the right amount of modelling propaganda, too much and the child will hate the idea and feel that life is pushing him/her towards that career route. Too little and it might go unnoticed. This may take a few tries but it works. You must keep in mind that the child should have no other ambitions in life and without your help she would join the great unwashed at the back of the bus.
If the propaganda does not work either;
Terminate the child and return to step three.
Restart and move back to step one.

Step Six:
This is the most important step
You must wait until the child matures to 16 (making sure she stays 'holy' for the period of her life, this is a tough task considering she is going to be most beautiful) and then brutally murder her parents. It helps to make sure that the child see the result of the murder, just enough to make her understand the severity of the situation but not mentally destroy her. My prefered method is murder-suicide, usually by strangulation. This is the least messy and least shocking for the child to see. Seeing their parents brains splattered across a wall would destroy her and ruin your 23 years of hard work. Faking a double heart attack is always good aswell, its harder to pull off without the autopsy finding the actual cause of death but seems more natural for the child and is ultimately easier to get over. Choose your way carefully.
If the child gets too distraught by the events, you can either use your impressive guile to bring her from it or leave it be, knowing it was your hand that brought it into the world (not literally of course).

Step 7:
You need to watch the child carefully at this point, the two people she loves the most are gone from her world. She may attempt suicide or running away from it all. In both of these cases you must be the person to step in and save her from it all, it is good if this happens as its quicker than the 'merge' plan(where you slowly infiltrate the childs life and become the closest figure in his/her life) but it also takes the most guile and skill. After about 2 years she should respect you enough to help you guide her on her life path. This is when you suggest modelling and all of your plans come to fruition, she will have noticed the subtle signs in life that have pointed her towards this career path and having the most influential figure in her life helping her with 'whatever she chooses' is even more of a boost. It is important to gain the childs trust so she will be an enthusiastic model and therefore gain a lot of work. You should be taking a health cut of the money as her agent.

EDIT: Misunderstood the question, sorry.

i would suggest wings for a begginer if you just want to model if your looking to animate to i would start with wings get use to that(and good with it) then move on to either blender or perchase one. AC3D is a good $100 one but if you are a student i would HIGHLY suggest looking into Cinema 4D made by maxon. its around 1200 but for a student its only 100. so if you can i would highly suggest getting it. and if you do get cinema there is a site called C4D cafe. ut has around 100-150 user and none user tutorials and 10-20 master cinema users able to help you with almost any problem you may have. it doesn't export to .X but there is a free plugin that will allow it to. it does export to .3ds though.

also cinema has been used for many major animations. its also a very user friendly program. it comes with about 12 primitives to start modeling with. 15 deformers to animate with. it also has a basic scripting language that you could learn to create plugins with(usable inside the program). cinema 4D is a top notch program with so many possibility's that even most people that have used it for 2 or more years still haven't figured all the things it can do out. for $100 you might as well as be stealing this program. even 1200 seems cheap for how powerful it is(it can also use a net render to allow you to use your computer while rendering.
