Over the last few months, we have been working with Electroencephalographs (EEGS) to create games that you can play via a USB brain wave reading device!

Air Heads is the first of the tech demos we have created, and it demonstrates the EEGS ability to read how focussed the player's mind is!

The aim of the game is to collect the stars above you. To do this the player has to focus. As focus increases the balloon gets bigger and the player floats up. Left and Right is controlled with the mouse.

The game is 3D although presented like a 2D world. The entire project (media and code) was done in 1 week.

A video of the game (including menus, tutorial and gameplay) is available here

I can release a playable version if people are interested, although without the EEG, you are limited to moving the character with the keys, which isn't so much fun.

Interested to get some feedback on the style, and the idea, etc.

If you want to know a bit more about EEGs and see them in use in this game, check this link out.

BTW, the EEG interfaces through a custom DLL (first in the world!) created by Ollie Edgington, thought I should get him some credit in there!

Well that is beyond impressive, didn't realise the EEG thing was so easily available already.

As with most people I jump around which projects I work on and which I drop for a while.
Currently I'm back working on Sioux, a Hollywood Western RTS.

LOL, thank you! Unfortunately it's not readily available! We have one of only 2 prototype sets in the UK!

This looks cool. Well presented. No idea how the brain wotsit works. Are they going to start bundling them with wiis?

I wonder how many variables the human mind is able to control via one of these gizmos? Could you get him to go left and right as well as up and down purely with the power of the mind?

No offence, but you look like a bit of an idiot in that headset with your hair

Does it work better with no hair do you think?

Get one of those with the screen goggles and it will be mint.

I speak really stecatto.

Wow, this is pretty awesome. Shame we won't get to play it with out minds...

Is it a collection of plains, or does it have cell shading. I noticed that it's definitely 3D, but it still looks kinda flat.

This is pure genius, the first Brain-controlled DBP game...British Ingenuity...

Thanks! And Nintendo are looking to licence the hardware, although it's all under wraps!

Potentially. We're only using a prototype. The new set arrives on the 15th.
Right now it can't read your cognitive thoughts, so it doesn't know about left and right!

Won't be saying that when I'm controlling you like a puppet!
Only kidding. No you're right, we got it hooked up with one of those Carl Zeiss Cinemizer headsets, and it's full on sick!

CoffeeGrunt:

Thanks dude, you might get to play it sooner than you think!
It's partly plains and partly 3D meshes! THe hardest bit was the 3D balloon inflating and deflating!

Always pushing forward thanks to TGCs lovely products!

Dude, that's so freaking cool.

I like the game's style, by the way.

Odd that you hate the wii so much seeing this .
Been following this on youtube, and it looks pretty interesting, I wonder about brain cancer with that thing on your head though, cancer is already a concern with phones etc.

Hmm, but wouldn't that only be receiving brain waves? I know nothing on the topic though.

This is pretty cool, I didn't know db could take that kind of input.

It's an EEG, same as they test you with in hospitals...more or less, no brain damage or such...it isn't even conclusive that cell phones damage you...

If this ships out wit the Wii, I will hug whoever at Nintendo's idea it was. Seriously, although I believe this'll wait 'til the "Wii 2" pops up...

Yeah, this isn't sending anything to your brain, it's only recieving.

As a point its not the same as the thing they use in hospitals, these are DRY biosensors, so you don't need to put any gel on your skin between the sensor and you. you just plonk it on!

We had to write our own app in C to send the data to DB, but after that it worked an absolute treat!

LOL. Well, I don't really like the wii, but that's not to say I don't see the potential for making games on it. It's got the largest market share, and therefore the most people available to buy games for it!

If people are interested I can upload a version that you can play with just the mouse and keyboard.

Well, without the funky helmet there's not really much point...
