I'm back from the depths of the Blender wiki with basic knowledge of animation and the start of a series of projects to refine my skills. I plan to do several animations incorporating different aspects of the Twelve Principles of Animation, ending with a final project around the time I graduate college (4 years, 4 months from now). This first one is not aimed at any particular Principle, just me getting acquainted with animation in Blender and concept.

Since the movie WALL-E has influenced me to get into animation, robots were the obvious first choice for the subject of my debut. The premise is simple:A curious little robot on an infinite grey plane comes across a box with a set of computer chips inside. Each chip inserted into a slot in the robot's head causes different modifications and effects to happen to its body.

I currently have 6 effects planned, and probably won't do any more than that. I've got the robot modelled and rigged, and still have to model the toybox and different effects. I would have posted sooner, but I went through several revisions with the design, particularly with the head. I think I should have planned this out ahead of time.

Anyway, here's a render of the little guy giving a wave.

I'm still working on the materials, although they probably won't be much different than this in the final version. I want to focus on the animation more than the materials and 2D art.

Here's a wireframe, although you can't tell much for details. As usual, the poly count got a little out of hand at spots.

So, whaddya think?

Definitely Wall-E inspired. But I have to say, that is the cutest robot I have ever seen.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I've hit a bit of a snag with getting some of the effects to fit correctly -- It's a lot of stuff to cram into that little body.

Made a little clip of the toybox opening, just so you guys wouldn't think I'm slacking off. If anyone knows what's causing the weird shading issues in that animation, please let me know. I think I can get most of the animation blocked out by the end of the week if I don't have too much homework.

Lol, I'm not sure what that glitch is. Perhaps an errant Normal?

That glitch could be a few things. I've had flickers like that when my final gather samples were too low (if it's using final gather that is). It could also be a stitching problem due to having due polygons at the exact same spot, but I'm not sure that is the problem here (but check the gemoetry anyway).
