My first gun!

Low poly made with 3ds max 9 32-bit.

Tell me what you think

I started with a plane and a reference image in the background.
Then i extruded edges from the plane and used tools like Cut, Bridge, Make Vertex and Weld.

I decided to use the reference image as the texture and set the uv map to plane, this made the weapon almost finished uv mapped i only needed to tweak some verticles

Looks okay, just a little... Awkward... Somehow, I can't quite put my finger one it.

You went over the top with the low poly thing, the gun is very boxy and wide, the texture is also very simple on the front sides of things, seems like you just put a photo on the sides or something.

I love how you're just ignoring the criticism Alucard is giving you. Your Colt is quite boxy, and you could definitely put a lot more detail into it without adding to the poly count much. Also it's not a very good idea to use the reference image as the texture, the top of your guns shows very little if any texture detail. Also the black grip part on the handle is partially off the handle at the bottom. The little gray sight thing towards the end of the gun is untextured, as is the triangle at the back. On the Scorpion you're using the ref image as a texture and relying on it too much for detail, you should really model more of the detail into the mesh, otherwise it will look flat and boxy. Also the two pipe things need their normals smoothed.

Who said i ignored him?

I take the time to read what you say so i can get better, but like i said these are my first weapons.

And i havent taken the time to add extra detail yet but i probably will, i didnt find any texture maps for my weapons and the reference images looked ok so i used them.

And the aim on the colt isnt untextured, just very badly textured

looks good but very boxy and the texture on the scorpion doesnt match the model at all =P try making ur models more "smooth" at the edges and after that try some details =P but looking good for first ones though =P

I say make them yourself, I know it's hard and what not but hey, practice makes perfect.

Yeh, i find it really hard.

But if you would make a rusty metal texture then how would you do it?

Photshop.

you wouldn't make it from absolute scratch (well in some instances you can). instead you would manipulate it to make it you're own.

if you are really not sure then go look up some tuts on rusty/metallic textures and whatnot. www.good-tutorials.com is a good site and i know there is a thread somewhere listing an incredible amount of reference, tutorial, creation, and other links.

go to the tutorial sites and just keep on doing tutorials, even if they have no immediate use. the knowledge you gain from doing them and the repetition will vastly improve you're skills until you eventually get to the near life like standard.
