i don't have many icons on my dt, just doesn't help to work like that... my start menu is kitted out alot differently to other peoples though.
don't keep any games on my dt - this is either because the machine i'm using doesn't have any, or its an attempt to stop people from using my systems.

Never really liked putting the apps icons on the desktop (takes up too much space), instead I keep any downloaded files their temporarily (usually for up to a few months) and keep all my most used apps in a Quick menu in the bottom right or the quick launch bar (as shown).

Usually I like to keep my desktop clean but on this occasion it's not (even has a couple of Toad's tech demos) lol.

Oh, and we should start posting our actual desk pics, they're by far the most amusing

I cannot stand the in-built themes, so my desktop uses a MacOS X theme. Currently as you can see, I am working on various programming tasks at once

I don't like icons on the desktop - so I keep it nicely catagorised on the start menu.

@Raven - I noticed that you have standard Kazaa on your desktop - you are aware that standard Kazaa is chock-a-block full of spyware?

Odd... I can't stand many desktops. I have a nice, black, blank screen, with a single, neatly arranged row of icons.

actually i have Kazaa 2.5.5 Registered, from what i understand the free one is still at 1.7.x right?
i have all of the adware taken out, and you get Bullguard free - which is built into it.

which does everything my Norton does but specifically for what Kazaa has... Anti-Virus/Firewall/Ad-Spyware destroyer all in one.
not to mention its updated every time you log on.
dunno why anyone would risk using any other file sharing program to be honest.

i see alot of messy overcrowded desktops not sure how you guys can stand to use them.

I meant using Kazaa Lite instead (spyware removed). I never use file sharing programs often, I think the only file I've ever downloaded using Kazaa Lite was the Doom3 E3 Alpha.

you know Kazaa Lite offers you no protection against hackers or virus' right?

it also rewrites some of your registery to allow some more direct contact.
even standard Unregistered Kazaa is better than that.

i like the 2.5.x search engine, allows upto 40 searches for the same name over 4 different networks
can connect to eMule servers
can connect to website directly
you can have upto 200 callback names per search (thats not upto 200 instances)
unlimited uploads (but thats really pointless and i turn it off)
unlimited downloads (again pretty pointless and i tend to set it to 5max)
configureable pipeline speeds
peer2peer points manager (allows you to have free purchaseable downloads (gold ticker) when you download enough yellow ticket downloads)
peer2peer Extentions (the new more stable and safer p2p networking)
better search facilities (upto 100search tabs)
better family filters (they actually work now)
known virus, pirate, porn files are now truncated

generally is far better and easier for sharing files, especially with the new PerUser settings - so you can now allow only certain people to access your shared or a specific share folder.

I hear that a lot, but the thing that makes me want to download ZNes is for the most part that online play is a lot more efficient.

And Mattman, you couldn't find any games for SNES9X? I downloaded 150 off KaZaA, including Donkey Kong Country 1-3 (My Favorite Trilogy Ever!):

Mainly cars. This one has an RB5 Scooby, have another with an EVO 7 extreme, one with a Lotus Elise 111S, one with mainly Lupo GTI (I don't use that one as much as my lodger, who ownes a Lupo surprisingly). Apart from that I have one with a nice fractal, and another which has a pic of an old Atari ST. My work machines have the company logo with Captain caveman next to it, and another which is totally black (is only a 366, so wanted to save resources).

All my machines though have tonnes of icons on the desktop. Loads. Just seem to increase loads. Work is obvious; loads of things to do, little time to organise. But at home it's just being really lazy. All of them now have at least one desktop folder in the corner. ie. once you almost fill a complete desktop with icons then chuck it all into a folder in the corner of the destop. Viola. Nice clean desktop with old stuff still there. Should do it more often though, massive amounts of desktop icons can be a bit of a hog.

Cheers

Haha, that's EXACTLY what I do. There's about 6 extra full desktops of icons and folders in my 'Desktop' folder which is located just under the 'My Docs' folder because I use them about as much as each other lol.

Sure thing:

Quote: "Computer Rules, which must be followed:

1) If Freedom does not start up correctly, tell Mom and
DO NOT GO ON THE INTERNET UNTIL IT IS FIXED !!!!!!!!!

2) NEVER run or download a program sent in email !!!! Even if it says it is from Microsoft!
All programs on-line must come from website links and you must make sure you know/trust who
you are dealing with !!!!!

3) Any program/file that is downloaded must be scanned for viruses before running !!!!
This is MANDATORY !!!!!!!

4) Any alerts from Norton Anti-Virus must be addressed !!! Do not ignore them; let Mom know!

5) Do not open/view emails from people you don't know. Just delete them!

6) Every week specific maintenance needs to be done on this computer by MOM !!!
This includes deleting temporary files from all the nonsense you guys are doing on-line !!
As of 4/30/2003, this computer has under 10 gig of free space and needs to be defragged!

7) Every week a full system scan must be run by Norton Anti-Virus AFTER getting the latest
.dat files updated !!!!!!!!!

8) Do not give out your personal information to anyone unless approved by Mom/Dad...this
includes your address, directions to where you live, your phone number, nothing!

9) Do not trust on-line people just because you think they are nice! You could end up in
serious trouble!

10)Do not visit adult sites. If I find out you are, parental controls will be enabled again
and you won't be able to use this computer on-line if Freedom's server is down!

11)No further software will be installed that interferes with the functionality of the Windows
XP operating system and configured hardware. That includes CD drive software Preston !!!
Administration tools indicates problems with your CD drive now !!!!!!!!!!!!

You need a program called WindowBlinds. Personally I hate it but a couple guys here use it, a free version comes with about 8 desktops but you need to purchase it for a lot more.

WinBlinds, WinStyles & Microsoft Plus!
they all have thier own formats for desktops, if you get the Core Platform SDK you can actually make you own desktop thing.

i've not tried as it looks hard as hell, but the information is all there and for free

that said... Icf's desktop is a pretty impressive one - most i've seen are pisspoor, but thats actually got alot of style to it.
bet its heavy on the graphics card though.

Hey, Exeat, is that the mac video about how easy the mac is to shut down...yeah i have seen that one, and it looks like most of you run XP...i wanna know why...i just recently started use 2000...GO 98SE...ok maybe not anymore...but i hate XP i hear people who use it say "i have never had problems with it but everyone else i talk to has had it crash", i cant get the damn button to open the DVD drive i had to use power DVD to get it to open so i got my own new computer and decided that i wouldnt use XP till the newest version of 3DSMax wouldnt run on it...

And raven my KLite is at 2.5.5 and has bullgaurd and i dont use a registered thing, i just downloaded it and started to pir...i mean share files...ahem...actually i only download a song if i plan to buy the actual album...being a developer i understand how much piracy kills us...

i get performance drop even on my top-end systems with winblinds... it has less to do with the processing as much as it does with the memory.

the problem is that everything cept Windows Plus! is running 2 desktops, the orginal classic - then the style update.
the more perpixels and bitdepth of the styles the more memory and processing power it takes.

i mean you really need an Athlon 1Ghz w/512Mb Ram to make sure your desktop refreshes properly and if your using your system over 1024x768 recommended desktop size, the memory useage doubles per 50% increase.

512kb per application window might not seem like much, but when you have 20-30 windows open + all of the desktop effects on like shadows, alpha, fadein/fadeout animation, animated logos, etc...
(include windblinds/style both are rendering 2 desktops)

well you'll find your standard desktop processor charge hits upto almost 35threads before your even running any actual processor intensive tasks.

using photoshop / max5 / msdev compiling / beta game
plus the 10-20 windows in photoshop w/multiple layers ... with windblinds it can take a whole 4seconds for the screen the refresh itself properly even on my AhtlonXP 3200+ w/QuadroFX 2000 w/3Gb ram
thats at a resolution of 1280x960 (my preffered dt setting) @ a refresh of 120hz (which is max for my monitor at that res)

... ...

well anyways i've got ahold of a new theme manager which now works natively as part of the uxtheme.dll rather than as a desktop hack. Even got a pretty new dt to go with it

... i'm sorry but its only nerds who seem to have problems with XP
those people who decide that its cool to piss around with the setup when they don't really have the first clue of what they're doing.

its like
nerd - "oh no windows won't boot up no more!"
techy - "what did you do last?"
nerd - "i deleted command.com cause it looked like a virus"
techy - "... ... *click*"

sorry but you piss around with your systems what do you expect.
i mean for christ sake i'm running a beta of Windows .Net (longhorn) here which seems to be more stable than the hunks of junk your people are running.

i don't do anything special ... i don't overload my applications ... i don't fill it full of junk.

i scandisk & virus check every friday & defrag once a month, i don't generally touch any of the actual internal programs.
infact when i do THATS when i have problems with desktops not refreshing - programs not loading - etc...

moral is... if you ain't got a scooby - leave it the hell alone!

Well Raven i just lost my respect for you, because, i am sorry that my straight out the fukkin box dell wasnt setup correctly so that i could open the drive, as for deleting stupid shit like the command promt then you may as well not be a nerd cause any computer nerd would understand what that was...and well i obviously understand more about XP than you because any new operating system has problems especially when the pretty faceplate has been added tot the damn thing cause anything that can be changed with mod-like programs and such is bound to be fukked up in some way...nothing is ever bug free and XP is far from it...i know some things that have problem with XP and XP is crap so...u wanna call me a nerd feel free cause i know more than you at the moment about XPs craptactualar-ness so can u honestly say you have never had problems with XP...oh, and as for using different mod things on my dell...yeah i just took it out of the box and i got a DOS prompt for a admin password after a month, and after the whole thing my drive wouldnt open...so cmon ask me about how i hate XP i can give you a list of bugs and problems so long that you will pass out...who else has had bugs in XP

PS Raven, i was just messing with i had stressful time with XP, lol, and i like to piss people off who like it...lol

... don't care how much respect ya loose for me.
command.com is a 16bit dos kernel - XP does still have it but doesn't need it, its just a tech question i remember hearing alot from people who thought they knew what they were doing when i used to be a techy.

XP is fine, as long as you don't piss about with it - hardware problems are oftenly actually hardware problems, either faulty hardware ::CoughLiteOnCough:: else its an buggy driver ... which isn't the fault of Microsoft or XP.

i know XP does have a long list of bugs, but I've never had it crash on me without ME actually touching something i shouldn't.
i've never had anything odd happen to it...
and the ONLY thing i've seen actually take it down are some pretty power virus's - because its got protection on the core essentials.

i've never seen anyones XP crash with them just using it, and i have NEVER EVER seen the blue screen that is so common in the other Windows.
i've crashed my processor before, something in 3D Studio Max when it renders intensive tasks does it ... but thats only on my Duron systems, and i think its because of a thread overload and only on FAT32 (but then it also happened in Win2k and WinME)

as far as all of the OSs go XP is the most stable i've used
