Hi Everyone,

Thought I'd share some screenshots of my WIP first person adventure/educational title "Virtual Frontiers: Daniel Boone and the Hunters of Kentucky". To give you some info, I am currently working towards my doctorate in history and have my first book coming out in the next few months. This project grew out of my attempt to recreate (with a certain degree of accuracy) some of the first forts founded in Kentucky (1775-1778) and it seemed like a good idea to try expanding that into something that people could download and have a bit of fun with. At the momnet I have finished the first six levels - so far the game has alot of areas for players to discover that offer up little historical annecdotes as well as a bunch of other tasks such as hunting and exploring.

I also plan to add levels where the player must act as an escourt for settlers moving through the wilderness and anything else I can think of. I've also employed Conjured Entertainment's money system which works really well! I'm not really thinking of this project as a game per se - more of an interactive environment with game like elements so any feedback would be appreciated. I hope to have a demo posted in this thread sometime in the coming week - again, feedback would be greatly appreciated! But remember,I'm a historian (read: n00b) not a game developer so please be kind!

good idea, but you are only getting 15 fps...I'd recommend trying a speed increase mod.

awww man, don't talk to me about frame rates!!!!! LOL!!! I have had a nightmare with them - the problem with this whole thing is that virtually everything is outdoors. Boonesborough takes up almost the entire grid! I can't even get cabin interiors - when I tried the game won't build at all! I was just working on a hunting level and I had bits where the frame rate dropped incredibly low - I was tearing my hair out trying to get it to run OK. I also had no idea about speed up MODs - do you have the names of any for me to look up? Thanks for the feedbacl puppy, much appreciated

Overall, it looks fairly good, and I'd like to see more in this genre. I am thinking about making the same sort of interactive media for the German invasion of Poland in 1939. You seem to know your way around FPSC's workings, such as the custom media and the lightmapping. If you have any questions on anything, feel free to email me and I'd be glad to help out.

Hey Gunn3r, thanks for that I think the hardest thing is getting the balance between education, or the fact hunting and actual gameplay - particlary as this genre has such potential. For instance, in Virtual Frontiers you play a settler moving to the west and your first mission, once you reach the frontier, is to go hunting as the fort is desperately short of food (as it was at the time) - so on the one hand you are having to deal with the realties of frontier life and the hardships (Indians are attacking you whilst you hunt and generally making life difficult) whilst the historical facts remind you always that you are the invader and that these Indian attacks are totally justified. Of course people might not pick up on that and may instead think it is a dull game. LoL, who knows!

A couple of tricks I did for my game (http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=136232&b=35) to get a decent framerate (only for fast machines though) was:

1. Only spawn other characters just before the player sees them and not at the start of the game.

2. Look for 'invisible segments' somewhere on here and surround the entire town with them, like the entire town is inside one big room.

Try these, they may help.

Thanks for the tips! Although the framerate in the fort can be low it isn't really noticable as there is no action during these stages, but for the main outdoor scenes that might just do the trick. Spawning characters - is that the same as loading entities on the fly? (I don't know how to do it but something like that caught my eye in the official community guide)

I like the concept and the screens but the lighting puts me off. The outdoor areas should be a pale blue due to the light from the moon, not bright yellow. Try mixing it up a bit and playing around with different colours. Maybe add some fog aswell, for some dramatic ambience.

I douby Boone was a hunter, he was more of a frontiersman.

I like the look of this; hell, I like it even more due to the fact that I'm related to Boone (distant cousins or something).

Hi Private

I'm actually doing my doctorate on the Kentucky frontier at the moment and my first history book (Daniel Boone and Others on the Kentucky Frontier) is out in a couple of months and features your cousin's autobiography as one of the collected documents - I'd be happy to send you Boone's narrative if you like.

re: the frontiersman/hunter thing I think you are making a distinction where none is required. Because of the intense war between the settlers and the Indians it was very hard for most communities to live on anything other than hunted game - all their corn was litterally burnt. In the town of Boonesborough which Daniel founded the years 1777-1779 were pretty hard going - the hunter was king and all the people we might call "frontiersmen" developed their early reputations because they could provide their communities with food, Boone included.

The Hunters of Kentucky subtitle dates from the early 19th century - this was the label that Kentuckians began applying to their frontiersman and was popularized in the song, The Hunters of Kentucky - which goes something like this...

“Ye gentleman and ladies fair,
Who grace this famous city,
Just listen if you’ve time to spare,
While I rehearse a ditty;
And for the opportunity,
Conceive yourself quite lucky,
For ‘tis not often that you see,
A hunter from Kentucky.

Oh Kentucky, the hunters of Kentucky!
Oh Kentucky, the hunters of Kentucky!”

-phew- hope that's cleared things up! Maybe you would like to demo the game for me in a bit? The idea is that it is educational first and foremost (although not aimed at children!). I'd be interterested on hearing your take on it. I should have a demo ready in the next couple of weeks.

Cool to see my pig and chicken in there. This is a great genre and it's great to see it in fpsc. It's good to see a game to help kids get more interested in history. If you need any specific media I would love to help out.

Hi Ron John - I bought the hands from the Game Creators store - you will find them if you search for fantasy of medieval in the search bar.

Gotta love the way you are using media you have to hand to create a pretty convincing scenario, I hope some of the guy's around here can help you out with the media your going to need, your doing real well so far but sooner or later your going to get stuck.
Personally I am sure I can help out with some distant treeline billboards I have laying around (send me an e-mail) will also see what else I can find that might help with your outdoor scenes, its not impossible to create outdoor terrains that dont lag in FPSC, the difficulty is in making them convincing. The most successful scenes are created by having a skybox and distant objects which tie together seamlessly, with an area for the player to roam in (essentialy as much of the grid as possible) with border areas being inaccessible (usually blocked by fences, brush, hedges, buildings or whatever).
I also would recommend s4mod for a speed improvement.

Hi Rofly,

Thanks for all the tips! I have to admit the media has been the toughest part - this little project actually started off simply as a reconstruction of one fort interior with little to nothing to do - it wasn't until Bond1 released his medieval material on the TGC Store that I could populate the world and even think about turning it into anything that even resembled a game. The biggest thing holding me back are the lack of muskets or early rifles available for purchase and probably more game animals - at the moment hunting missions require you to hunt pigs that have escaped into the woodlands - that said SamHH has made sure they are very pretty pigs!


The outdoor scenes have been the bane of my life so far! I started with some really open levels packed with trees that struggled to reach 10fps - now most of them employ Xploys' distant treeline to create narrow corridors. The game runs at speed now but it is a bit life a hedge maze though!


The distant treeline billboards sound great - I was just away to email you anyway re: your weatherpack so I'll go and do that now

Quick question I hope someone can help me with:

How hard would it be to make this musket I found (http://www.turbosquid.com/3d-models/3d-rifle-musket-civil-war/390876) into an FPSC weapon? I think I saw something recently on this board - a piece of third party software that boasts the whole process should be quite easy, does anyone if this is true? Does anyone use this software? If so, would it be possible to turn this model into a basic weapon in the game? (Sorry if this sounds very n00bish!)

I wouldn't buy that model, since it isn't textured you can bet it's not uv mapped so putting a texture on would be a bit of work. Weapon Creation system by bullshock is a nice piece of software. It won't animate for you but there are several nice tutorials for doing that. Or... I might make one. I think fpsc could use some models of this era so I will probably cobble some together.

Thanks for the advice, I wouldn't have known tha about the texturing, UV mapping, etc. Yeah, it was the Weapon Creation System which I saw and thought it looked handy! If you ever get round to making one I'd be happy to buy it!

I'd hope not... Several of those weapons would be from about 100 years in the future if his game is set in 1775-1778

I think muzzle-loaded flintlocks were state-of-the-art through the mid 1800s.

Refreshing to see something different. It seems everyone else feels the same way. Lots of people jumping in to lend a hand. I have to confess Im stuck in a sci fi mode and cant come up with something original.

I hope you will let us know when your book comes out. I have been developing a taste for history as I get older.

About 15 sec. for an expert. Mostly you would have an extra rifle for a quick follow-up shot, if you could afford one. In a defensive situation, it would be someones job to just do reloading while someone else is doing the shooting and alternate between rifles. They also had these wicked 3-edged (V shaped which create triangle puncture wounds that don't close without medical assistance) bayonets which would get fouled up after a few volleys before the enemy got into close-combat range. Someone might survive the battle only to die later from poisoning or infection.

Hi Everyone, thanks so much for the support! I hoped to have a demo put online today but I took the weekend off - hopefully in the next few days. Regarding the weapons the Civil War era and Private's suggestions are a bit too late (thanks though). Really a flintlock rifle would be great (@puppy of kosh and private - they could take up to 4 minutes to reload!) but really any old looking rifle (or musket) without a reload function would do the trick - I envisioned the weapon simply dipping out of view for the "re-load" part of it if anyone is up for the challenge. For anyone who is interested here is an image of the type of rifle most often employed in Kentucky around my time:

Not at all - I'm a historian so this kinda stuff is like crack to me (j/k)!!!

My understanding of the weapons of the time is that muskets could be reloaded relatively quickly but the Pennsylvannia Rifles (later Kentucky rifles) could take minutes. The sources I am dealing with back up 100% of what you are saying about infection - I'd estimate that up to 80% of those killed by gunfire during my period died...non-instant deaths - very nasty stuff! I think rifles (as opposed to muskets) were employed because of the huge jump in their accuracy but they took so long to reload that the tomahawk (for settlers and Native Americans) was the real killing weapon employed.

Very true. Penn./Ky. Rifles were very much weapons meant for accurate shots vs volley use with smoothbores. I could see it taking longer if setting up for a 400 yard shot and needing to carefully count grains of propellant, perfectly seating the bullet, etc. Because of the mathematics for the ballistic trajectories involved. I'm sure getting the perfect hold-over prior to taking the shot would take time as well. What I have some difficulty understanding is how one would muzzleload a bullet into a rifled barrel without engaging the rifling and deforming the bullet. Unless, of course, there was a fair amount of "swelling" (for lack of a better term) at ignition to cause the bullet to engage the rifling only once the gun has been fired.

Anyhow, I'll mess around with this tonight and see what I can come up with for you. Seeing as how you don't require on-screen reloading it should be real simple. It will also give me a bit of a head start because I've been planning to make an arquebus or similar for my fantasy collection and ultimately there will be a fair amount of commonality, from an animation perspective. It wouldn't be much of a streatch for me to whip up a tomohawk (melee, not thrown) and Arkansas toothpick (or whatever would be appropriate) as well, seeing as I already have the needed animations at hand.

winchester was in ww1,colt peacemaker also around there so doubt it,maybe a unnamed small revolver that might have been around in those times,but weaponry that loads from the front into the barrel is a must in this game,keep it up

It was designed in 1873, actually. The revolver used in WWI & WWII by the British allies was possibly the Webley Mk. II/No. 2.
