I've been working a lot on this game. It's basically an attempt at a clone of the original SSB but I'll be able to put whatever characters I want in it. I started making it after I was dissapointed with how SSB Brawl turned out and the characters I wished I could play as.

So far it's just the basics. The character can move around and use "A" button attacks including smashes. Right now Mario is the only character, but I've done experiments with Sonic.

Next on the list would be to code in the hurt animations for when Mario gets hit. I already have collision detection set up.

Anyway, I thought I would show you guys my progress so far and see what you think. What characters or ideas would you like to see in the game? What should I even call it?

I can't release of a copy of the game, unfortunately, because I'm using the Mario model from New Super Mario Bros. If I were to make a release version I would need someone to give me a Mario model that wasn't ripped from anywhere, but made from scratch. This would have to happen for all the characters I put into the game.

I REALLY like the look of this game. Good job.

For a Mario character you could ask that guy who made "Super Kario Bros." if you could use his model.

I thought it looked familiar! lol.

I agree with Aaron, this game looks fantastic! Are you using DB or DBPro? Also, I'm sure if you wrote to the guy who wrote Super Kario and asked his permission you could use his model. OR, you could check turbosquid.com, they have a LOT of free models. It's worth checking out.

Good luck and keep up the great work!

Hey, this is awesome! I will be looking forward to playing this.

If you would like a few levels, I have 2 of them, one being the hyrule castle remake.

Check out Tgc Heroes. It's a The Game Creator version of Super Smash Bros 64.

I'm writting it in Dark GDK and I'm animating the models with blender. I'll have to ask about Super Kario. Oh, and I've already seen TGC creators. It's seems like a good game, but mine is more of a direct clone.

Thanks for all your comments!

Ok, I recently got collision and all the fighting mechanic completed. Just thought I would mention that production on this game is still moving along.

Nice job so far. I really liked the smash games, but I never had a N64 nor a GC so I couldn't ever play these games except at parties and friend's house. So I'm expecting a release

Good job so far. Keep it up.

lol.

@kevinsbro
I'm not sure what you should call it. Maybe "Mega Smash Bros." or something dangerously close to the name of the game it's "pretending" to be (like Guitar Zero and Guitar Hero), but not close enough to get sued. Oh, try not to use "Ultra" or "Ultimate" in the name.

As for characters: Link. Bowser. Wario. Waluigi. LUIGI!. And umm... Bill Gates.

Good luck.

Cheers,

OK, here's a status report:

So far I've got all movement and collision working. Both with the map and the characters themselves.
I also got the A button moves working, with mid-air, ground, and smash attacks.
The characters also can get hurt and take damage in the same style as SSB.
When a character is knocked off the field, they die.
I've also recently got started on the B attacks and now Mario can shoot fireballs.

In a few more months I might be ready to release the first version.
I still need to work on some of the little details, but it's coming along great.

I think for the first release then characters will be Sonic, Shadow, Mario and Luigi

I'm open to any ideas if anyone has any

Lol, Bill Gates. To be fair though, what about Steve Jobs? How come nobody ever picks on him?

Keep it up kevinsbro! I'll definitely be standing by to download your first playable demo.

Progress is still moving, and it's looking better than I expected. It would still be a few more months until I released the first demo, because there's a lot I still want to do, but I think it's looking really nice.

ScreenShot

I have a Question, though.

I'm using the GhostObject comand a lot and ocasionally things look weird when two ghosted planes overlap eachother. Like, it sometimes just disapears and then reapears once it comes out from behind. I'm pretty sure this is because of the order the objects are being rendered. Does anyone have a solution?

I think it's a ZBuffer issue or something-- it gets mixed up with what order it draws the objects in. Try using Disable Object ZDepth on the ghosted objects .

The game is looking great by the way!

I had the ghost problem too. I'd suggest switching to
Set object transparency
and getting the alpha sorting turned on. That seems to eliminate the problem.

hi a quick question about the models. would you just need the model or the animations remade as well? cause i could probably do some for you.

please answer through an email at azunaki1@gmail.com (and also a list of characters, and images of the characters)

this is nice and all but...you ARE re-inventing the wheel... so, what are you going to do with this that makes it stand out from the original??(besides the fact that it is on the computer..) just curious.

looks great by the way.

Basically, I was mad at how Brawl turned out, so I decided to just make my own. It does seem a little pointless to recreate a game, but what I planned to do with mine is keep updating it with different playable characters. The possibilities would be limitless

that sounds great..i never really looked at brawl but perhaps you could add some shaders along the road to give it more finesse?

Looks sweet. I'm pretty sure you can release a copy even if the media is copyrighted, so long as you don't sell it or otherwise make a profit from it.

Even if Nintendo or whoever do get funny about it, you can always release the game using "placeholders", and slyly let people know where they can get the copyright infringing replacement model files from.

Aren't you worry about copyright issues by using the Mario image? Nintendo is known to even go after freeware stuff. I have a Boulder Dash clone I wrote years ago that I could not sell because I later found out that the original copyright holder still exists. I am also cloning the "Car Wars/Autoduel" concept and have to make enough changes to avoid such legal issues. However if it is at the point to where a 9 year old kid can tell the difference between the two games, it is a different game. Still think you should not use the Mario character though.

I say, see how long you can get away with it. It's not like Nintendo has time to track down and sue every freeware game that involves their characters. As for characters, Ganondorf, Link, Rockman, Sonic, Samus, Lord Farquad, Kirby, and a really sucky Mewtwo.

Your best bet is to produce characters that contain traits of various mainstream characters and quietly encourage others to make the proper characters.

If the game takes off it will just be a google click away. Never underestimate the amount of time corporations will take to protect their IP.

That looks great
I wouldn't worry about copyright infringement though. Worst case scenario is that they tell you to stop and you need to edit some textures and rename a few characters.

Maybe after you finish the project you could create a PDF tutorial on making the game. I'm sure there are many forum users that would love to create their own Super Smash Bros game, including me!

By the way... you might want to see another Smash fan game. Super Smash Flash (http://www.mcleodgaming.com/games.php) was made in Flash. Also before I forget, what was it about Brawl that disappointed you? I haven't played the game, but I think it looks fun.

Ok, it's been a while since I've posted an update.

What I have so far is a fairly well working engine with both stock and time matches working. I also have the winner screen completely finished. The only actually playable character is only mario, but I already have half of sonic working.

I don't think I'm going to release it until I get at least 4 character (mario, luigi, sonic, shadow) and 3 maps. I'll have a lot of time to work on it over the summer so progress might start to pick up again.

Oh, and I think the version I will release to you guys will be basically stick figures of the characters and it probably will have no sound because I'm not sure I'm allowed to distribute the sounds.

@ kevinsbro

Do you need help with the maps? I am a pretty good modeler and have a few maps lying around from my attempt of making a fangame...

I have the hyrule castle remake, and a weird level called "volcano voltimato". You can program fire to shoot out of the top of the volcanoes for some fun. I also have some items lying around and a respawn object.

Please respond with an e-mail to alex.murray@gmx.ch if you are interested! I will happily contribute to this game.
