ARG I was almost done with this when my kitty pressed a certain key combination with his paws that closed the page.

So lets do this again. I'm one of those guys that mainly plays free games...which is partly because I'm broke. So I thought we could help each other and share links to fully free (no subscription required to "unlock" certain features, and not a demo) 3D games which you sometimes spend up to half the day on.

So here is my list:

FPS - Tremulous @ http://tremulous.net
MMORPG - Planeshift @ http://www.planeshift.it/
FPS - America's Army @ http://www.americasarmy.com/
(btw AA 3.0 is almost out and is in beta phase!)

I could probably think of more but those are my favorite.

EDIT:

Oh yeah, Battlefield Heroes, which is also in beta phase and will soon release! http://battlefield-heroes.com

Thank goodness your cat didn't press a certain key combination that pulled you into the computer itself to turn you into some geek super hero!

Oh, and my favorite free game:

I stinkin' LOVE AA (i've been playing since around 2.1)

[edit] oh, and this is kind of off topic... but i remember hearing about a medieval game where you get to run around and do stuff (very specific i know). And i think it was supposed to be pretty realisitc... and free maybe (or a commerical download). I think it had horse, or sword, or knight in it's title... but i can't remember what the name is. It's driving me crazy.

Medieval game sounds like Mount & Blade, which is amazing but not free. I bought it, had a blast.

Speaking of Mount & Blade, it's on sale on Steam now for $7.50. I just picked it up because I can't resist sales

It really is an amazing game. Gets a little pointless after a few weeks, but honestly, those weeks are fun .

I LOVE MOUNT&BLADE.
I still have that issue where I get 5 fps on a pc that can play crysis though. Not even the developers could help me.

Anyway, Battle for wesnoth rocks. I have a game in the background right now.

And Dyson:

And... no, I'm making a separate thread for that one.

There are so many remakes of that type of game, I've played at least two. It's fun trying to make the craziest course possible.

It's only the best free game ever made!

Have you heard that both Savage titles are free now?

I've seen that before. I'll have to try it out.

Yah my friends been trying to get me to play Battle for Wesnoth for awhile, it just doesn't appeal to me...maybe it's the cartoony 2D Japenese look. I'll have to check out Dyson tho.

I like 2d games - alot. I'm playing a several-month-long-200x200 battle in wesnoth now - mass strategy. I'm a super geek like that.

Dyson is very nice and addictive, it was one of those IGF finalists.

EDIT: And this one - sooooo adictive.

Ooh that reminds me. If you want online addicting several-month-long battles play Shattered Galaxy. It's really fun. http://www.sgalaxy.com/

EDIT:

Oh yeah, you do have to pay to unlock some features, I forgot.

I'll give anyone a warning if they install this. The login credentials are screwed up, if you are registered, it still won't log you on. I spent half an hour trying to login until I gave up.

If anyone has any solutions to this, please tell all of us, thanks.

Already mention but worth a second mention

http://www.wesnoth.org/

Seriously, go try it out, if you like strategy at all you should like it. It's available for Mac, PC, Linux, AmigaOS4, Solaris, RISC OS... pretty much anything...

oh, and you can play multiplayer games with two seperate OSes... i have a friend with a Mac and i'll play with him on my ubuntu laptop.

I just read about this thread in the newsletter... and wondered, if it was offtopic if I asked for some story-driven action-games? Freeware as well, of course.

And to get fully ontopic again:
Tag - The Power of Paint is an absolutely innovative and fun, small 3D puzzle-FPS.. or so. Not really FPS, all you shoot there is color.. quite a bit like portal.
And I got Peggle Extreme some time ago as Download from steam... it is called full version, but actually is rather a demo of Peggle Deluxe (I think). However, still pretty fun and addictive, even though its style is quite strange (I'm talking about headcrab-wearing unicorns )
Atm I can't provide any links though, will see if I can find them anywhere...

Rockstar has released the first two GTAs and Wild Metal Country as freeware if you're interested in any of them.

What good is knowledge without a degree of understanding?
