here are some of the better free ones: Blender, Anim8tor, Wings3D, and the Maya Personal Learning Editon.

Milkshape is by far one of the easiest, and produces great results. It's not free, but the price is extremely reasonable compared to something like 3D Studio Max. I paid $45.00 for it, and it was well worth the cash.

Temporarly away from the Phoenix Sentry.

I agree with crispex, I found milkshape was well worth the money. It has plenty of import and export possibilities that aren't only directed at FPSC, and there are alot of online tutorials, and videos for which ever modeler you choose.

Good luck.

Inivis AC3D is incredibly easy to use, my first model was a blue skip and that was after only 1 day of learning to use it

You can make characters, weapons and other things and it supports UV mapping as well.

Textures are incredibly simple to add

Email me for more info: [email protected]

Some of my models are:
Skip
Metal Cup
Window with breakable glass & windowsill
Spaceship
Stone Basin
2 floor building you can walk around
and a roof supported by metal poles.

And I've only been modelling for about 3 days now

the only reason why i recommended Maya was that it's a modelling program that pros use. MS3D is definitely has the most bang for the buck out of most of these programs.

i dont recommend that you START with making a organic model at first (in this case, you said u were making a human) =P i made that mistake - the body went fine, the face... ouch it hurts just thinking about it...

what i try to say is: start off with something easier =P
