I've in the first stages of developing a multi-parallax sidescrolling engine, and I haven't even so much as added sprites yet. However, I'm getting FPS as low as 20! It's ridiculous! You can download the VERY first stages of the engine that I've been working on here:

Please, give your FPS and any advice on making it faster. I'm really looking forward to some replies to this, so don't hesitate!

I got it to scroll about twice as fast

Just go to settings and choose Full Screen Exclusive Mode - 800 x 600. Also, replace the code for generating the sprites with this:

Woohoo! I'm smart! Lol

use 3d!!!
if u create a 3d plain and texture it, it will be faster than the
built in sprite commands. plus u get built in parrallax

On second thought, eek, I'm not gonna do that. I started doing a few tests and I don't like the results. The textured plains appear very dull, and it's complicated to get the camera angle just right to get a 2D perspective of things. I seem to be getting better results doing it the original way.

firstly to stop them being dull use the command
set object light [object number],0. and secondly u don't need to
have it perfect. if use 3d then you can zoom the image in and out
dynamically. also you have the option to switch to semi-3d at a late
stage in development wheras if you go for 2d your options close

Lol, actually I fixed it (look 7 posts up).

I'm now getting speeds of up to 70 FPS...

Well, maybe I'll still try 3D. We'll see

Can you post the new code? I'd like to have a look at it to see what you did, and maybe (just maybe) add some more speed

That's true, but it's how you use it that matters.
