Hi all,

I'm having a processing problem and was wondering if anyone can help.

I have planets revolving around a sun. When I texture them with bitmaps (to make them look like earth, venus, etc), everything slows to a crawl. When I get rid of the textures, everything runs fine.

Is texturing a problem for DBPro? Does anyone know if there's a way to texture a sphere and not have it slow down the entire program?

Maybe use JPGs instead of bitmaps???

Thanks,
john...

heres a great povray script should you need to design your own textures.

Hi,

The bitmaps are anywhere from 1 to 8 MB each, but I tried it with JPGs which are substantially smaller and it's just as slow.

After some experimenting, I realized that any time there's more then 3 textures in the scene, it slows down considerably. But when one planet leaves the screen (leaving only 2 textured spheres), things speed up again.

When I double up, for example, only load 2 textures and use them for all 4 planets, things stay fast.

This is true with bitmaps (about 5 or 6 MB each), as well as JPGs (40 to 150 KB each).

Does DBPro have a problem with several textures on moving objects all in one scene?

thanks,
john...

There isn't difference between BMP and JPG because your small JPG is decompressed into memory and get same size as BMP. Look at resolutions of textures. Are you using power of 2 sized textures? (64x64, 128x128, 256x256, 512x512). Also dont make your textures big because there is some limitation in graphics cards.

That sounds like a plan.

Thanks! I'll give it a try. The textures are very clear and detailed, and don't look to be sized power of 2.

ARGH! 5 or 6 mb each! so if you have a 8mb video card then a couple of those textures have to be moved in and out of system memory when they are needed, it should run fine with 1 planet in view, 2 is struggleing and 3 is mayhem, also, just because you may have a 128mb video card, most cards set a maximum size on the textures they use (say up to 512x512pixels), if you give them anything too massive then they have to recalculate the texture all the time to get it to fit into the allocated texture memory, resize your images, your video card will thank you for it (remember it also needs some memory to display the scene as well).
