Hypnagogia

Developer: Xplosys

Story:

Dreaming has been a part of human history for as long as anyone can remember, and it’s never lost it’s mystical veil over it’s denizens. The seemingly limitless interpretations of their value in our daily lives stretch to all walks of life. However, accompanied with this mystique is an altered state of consciousness known as “ hypnagogia “, or in it’s lay-terms, the “ borderland state “, the “ borderline “, or the “ half-dream “ state.

In the hypnagogic state, random voices may sound seemingly from no where, visual apparitions may materialize, origin-less thoughts could possess the mind which some have told they agreed with. Landscapes may paint themselves before you, your body may feel as if it’s grown to enormous sizes, or in some cases experience points of timelessness.

This short, single level demo explores what the mind may choose to show us and how we - in a hypnagogic state - might try to interpret it.

Background:

I've always been inspired by those who push the envelope with FPSC, and take it beyond it's normal or intended use. I was especially inspire by Butterfingers and his creation, Umbra. I tried to create an environment that had no restrictions or rules, something you might possibly encounter in a dream state. Open your eyes and follow the dream.

Wow, this looks very cool! I'll download and post a review in a bit.

EDIT: Wow! That was as cool as I thought!

Good: The level design was very good. Almost no stock stuff at all, and the custom stuff looked fantastic and really made the level great. The puzzles were also pretty clever. Took me a little while, but then I solved them (is the end after the board game part?). The music and the menus were also very well done, and made the game that much better. A very unique and fun game to play!

Bad: You kept the stock jumping sound, and the hurt sound was a bit annoying. Also, the bee got stuck occasionally.

Overall, it's one of the best FPSC games I've played. I can't wait to see the rest of the game! Beautiful job, Xplosys!

The cake? A delicious confection of layered, double-chocolate, surrounded by red-raspberry icing. Tempting to say the least, but I wouldn't eat it if I were you. No, I would not let it past my lips.

Best.

What is the end of a dream? If you got out of the game without pressing the escape key and quitting, then you must have woke up. Dreams don't always end the way we expect. LOL

Thanks all for playing!

Best.

Well, I just died a few times and then I pressed the escape key and quit. I thought it was the end.

Oh, and I cheated on that Cake thing. I wont ruin it for anyone else though. lol

Yeah, my bad. If you got to the circle in the middle of nowhere, then it's over. This has been on my hard drive for months, and I couldn't remember where I stopped. lol I found it the other day and made up the menus to release it.

@Robert F, Would you email me and tell me how you cheated?

Best.

Nice game xplosys, kind of like Umbra

@Off topic
Xplosys, why is your avatar as it is? I know that Private is part of the 3RDrb for DoD:S (As am I), but why have you got one?

Cheaters!

@Aaagreen,
The avatar is Staff Sergeant (US Army, 1975 - 1986). I don't know what 3RDrb for DoD:S is. I would guess that DoD is Department of Defense but really don't know anything about rank over there. When I noticed Private's avatar a while back I wanted to show mine too.

Although it was short, I liked it. A little tricky and a bit odd design-wise, a cool experiment. It reminded me a lil' bit of when you get to Magicant in EarthBound.

OK, had to look that one up, but yeah. It seems to be similar in that it's a construct of the imagination. Just a fun thing to do because there are no restrictions. Nothing has to be "correct" or "make sense". You just go with whatever you feel.

Though I won't be continuing with this one, I've started another similar, if somewhat more strange adventure.

Best.

Are you kidding me? It was great. If all 5 of our kids were fighting over who's turn it was, then it obviously caught their attention.

Of course I missed the beginning with the cake. The kids figured it out before me. lol

Looking forward to seeing more.

Cheers

Wow! I didn't expect to see this come up again. Thanks for the great comments. As for it being BOTB material, I have to disagree. Perhaps if I had taken the time to dress it up a bit better and actually finish it, it might be worthy. That and I didn't put it up for consideration, but I appreciate that you enjoyed it. Besides, "We don't need no stinking badges!"

It was a lot of fun to make and I think FPSC works well as an alternative type of game engine. You don't have to limit yourself to "run and gun" games.

Brian.

Talk about thinking outside the box O_o

Your extremely gifted Brian, the colours are vibrant with crisp clean graphics all round really nice on the eyes.

You have to continue this game it would be a real shame not to.
