For graphics try download paint.net, it's free and very good at making sprites and 2d effects.

That can be debatable I find Paint.net to be a better program but that's my opinion. It definitely has an easier interface then gimp.

I use gimp and paint.net and I'll say it's best to have both.
paint.net is good to build a sprite then adding 2d effects or make
images seamless is easier using gimp.

Edit: both gimp and paint.net are free!

Gimp is a great free tool, but the paint.net interfact is more windows standard.

If you're experianced with art programs, then Gimp 2.0 is a great choice.

If you are new, and want to pick up somthing fast, then Paint.Net is easier and quicker to learn.

Get PaintDotNet. It's better than gimp.

I am guessing he didn't seed the RNG with the time so you get the same random number every time you open the file.

I'm a paint.net user myself, but it's really up to the user how good either program. There are lots of plugins for paint.net if you check out their forums. You can't go wrong with either actually, or both. Also, if you could upload a pic of your game it would be very much appreciated.
