i've screwed up, while trying to fix up an old computer with a mate we decided reformatting the c: drive was a good idea, i'd never done this before so was naturally cautious even though it was my old computer, i found the windows 98 install cd so that i could get windows back after the format, i also found a cd with lots of drivers on. Anyways i went ahead into dos and typed
format c:
it understood,checked again and then deleted, after doing this i checked the web and found i should have made a boot disk, now nothing seems to work, i found a win 3.1 setup disk and tried that and it seemed to do something but it still keeps asking for a disc which i don't have, is there a way back from this? could someone explain??????

Does your BIOS support CD-ROM booting? If so you're lucky. Enter the Bios setup and change the boot order to CD-ROM first.
If not, do you run WIn98 on your newer computer? Then you can create a boot-disk from there.

I believe there are places online where you can download '98 boot disks . I'll do a search for you. I had a similar problem myself not too long ago.

Yeah, first check your BIOS. It has to be VERY old to not support booting off cd-rom.

You can also make a startup disk in winxp, but i tried one before and most of the commands had "dissapeared". It didnt have things like format and fdisk, but you could change directory. It might give you enough power to run the setup program from your cd

I'll try and have a think of other ways of doing it

depends on the bios,

normally its the "delete" key.

Then you'll have options that are normally chosen by the keyboard. Choose the "Basic" or "Simple" setup option, and look for boot sequence. If you cant find it, try the "Advanced" setup option.

It would help if you could tell me what bios your computer is running

The most important thing you should have done first is look and find out the names of the hardware and write it down so you can find the drivers on the internet after installing win98.

Booting off the win98 cd isn't worth the effort as only some of them boot and allow you to install.

Yeah you're right. However, Win98SE CDs are usually bootable.

Ummm, you could probably find it on a website, but if you cant, you can just go boot up windows XP, make sure it gets into windows XP & boots up fully, insert the Win98 CD & on some, you can create a bootup disk off of the CD itself without having to have it installed.

thanks for all the help guys! i fiddled with the bios and found the boot sequence shock forge mentioned and it worked! windows 98 installed but is now asking for the serial number which i've lost, i've been francticly looking around but was wondering if there anyway of finding out what the serial number is, or even a crack?
I'm suprising myself at my own stupidity these days
