I started a little something for the DBP coding challenge last night, and I might use that, I dont think the rules said you couldnt use content that was made before today.

I am so excited these are finally underway, that old thread in GeekCulture has been sitting around for too long, being all talk and no show.

My laptop has the following specifications:

2.1Ghz Centrino Dual Core processor
4Gb RAM
nVidia 9500M 512MB Graphics card
Windows Vista

And I'll be sorting through the entries.

As long as it runs on my machine you shouldn't have any issues. Most people I'd imagine have at least a nVidia 6600 or higher these days. Assume 1 or 2Gb RAM and 256Mb graphics memory, perhaps a unicore about 2.0Ghz and you'll be pretty safe.

P.S what counts as a TGC Store Account? I have a forum login etc but ive never bought anything off the website using my email. I got my mum to buy it...

Whoo hoo!
Its interesting how everything always comes at one time. Ive been sitting here, at my desk, for weeks on end doing nothing but little blippets of nothing. And all of the sudden, The TGC compos start up, I actually have half an entry for the DBP challenges, and me and my Pals have started a larger than normal project.

Guaranteed fun.

What's the rationale for making the unzipped file size limits of these games 30MB?(he confirmed this on IRC) This gives DBPro users a slightly unfair advantage as their exes are by default larger, you also said that we were allowed to compress media and things as long as the exe extracted them, but as I recall there are no free plugins for DBPro that handle archives easily compared to C++ so this makes it rather unfair to them. Furthermore, if the exe is allowed to extract them then doesn't this make the rule pointless and just gives the users more work to do?

1st called Light the Way, a mouse game, searching through darkness with only one light around you to get out of small levels.
2nd Penguin's Balls of Steel, a retro bubble remake ^-^

And I never said it did . It really depends on the game but some do require a lot of file size, for example what if you required the surface texture of a planet or something, for it to look any good you'd need some rather large surface maps(1024^2~), this can quickly add up and using compressed formats have penalties of load time and quality depending on the format. I can't be bothered to reword what I've already said so read my whole argument before posting, I'm not saying remove any file size limits, but instead impose it on the final uploaded archive rather than when said archive is extracted, as it makes no sense if the code can just extract the media from an archive thus getting around this.

Outscape <- Mini-games just mean's small games.

E.G. half life 2 is NOT a mini-game
Tetris could be classified as a mini-game

The rules state:

So I'm confused, should the entries be submitted as EXE's or should they be just the source file+media?

The "no EXEs" rule just means they don't want you to just upload an EXE straight up, they want you to ZIP it first.

I know that you know yourself that the definition isn't strict, but is there a fine line here between games and mini-games other than in size?

Maybe I'll get out DBP for this, I haven't touched it in a while, but I'm bad at sticking to competitions

1)If I us a DLL made by me that is closed code, do i have to show the code?. (I will make a public release so DLL can be used by the community for free)

2)The competition is only for one person? or a team can make a game?

3)About this point:

Hmm sounds like fun! I have one question. Even though i think on the rules list it said you can i just want to make sure. We can use 3rd party dlls and stuff right? So Sparky's Collision would be fine to use?

I would really like to join this competition but I read that you have to be signed up for the TGC store...I watched the video, but I can't register. It says I need to agree to the TGC Store terms and conditions (already read and agree with) but when I go to them, its just the terms and conditions it won't even let me accept them...

Any help appreciated..

Ps, dared1111, im hoping im not wrong in treating the minigame as a normal game, except not worrying too much about the detail such as story etc, but just getting a simple game done and dusted. The more fun the better!

Are we expected to use a new (or generally un-used) concept for our minigame, or would it be acceptable to remake classic arcade/minigames? For example, a "revamped" version of an NES game?

Hi,

My question is, not how to send the entry, but where?

The instructions on the other page for this competition were to watch the MSN Video on how to create and use the TGC store account, which I alerady have. It doesn't say whether to post it on this thread, upload it somewhere else, or what.

Could someone pleas enlighten me?

I have another question.

When we submit our game, I noticed in the readme.txt file that there was a field for Game Version...does this mean we update it starting at version 1 for example, and just increase it by, say...0.1 or 1.0 each time we update it, or is that just for the final version upon our last entry?

You just need to release DarkBASIC/ Professional/ DarkGDK source code, you don't have to release the DLL's source code.

You can enter a team if you like, pick a representative, they will receive the prizes, it's then up to your team how that prize is distributed. I won't bring TGC into the middle of any internal arguments.

Remember, this is a mini-game competition. Most mini-game concepts don't require a team.

It means we can publish both your source code and compiled exe on our website. Beyond that you can do whatever you like with it, it's your code, your game. Sell, give it away for free. Just be aware that your game will be available for download on our website indefinitely along with your source code.

Yes you can use third party plugins. Bare in mind any licence agreements that may come with these plugins. But that's an issue between you and the plugin author, it's not something TGC is responsible for.

You need to scroll down the page, and put a tick in the other boxes listed then click on submit.

Anything you like, but at the end of the day, if it's too weird or obscure, then you risk my not understanding it, and getting the wrong version judged. To be safe just use 1, 2, 3, 4 etc.

@ Daniel : I looked for the ticks but I could not find them...I'll double check.

*edit* The only place I see the ticks, is on the "Register new user" section...and it wouldn't accept my email becuase its already used in a TGC account...

monk, how goes your game, or have ya thought of the game idea yet ^-^

currently, i've been dabbling in and out of mine, and sorta some how... whilst programming them completely changed the idea xD. I've got a fully working demo of it though, just need to add some high scores and a menu system ^-^

If you have a collection of mini games, then you have more than one entry. We'll accept up to three. But they would need to be submitted seperately.
