Nebula - A Puzzle Game

In Nebula, a fleet of alien space stations has drifted into our solar system. No one is sure what they are doing there, but Earth does not want to take any chances.

You take control of the USSC Nebula, a small craft that can destroy other objects by launching space mines. Your objective is to destroy the alien stations.

DOWNLOAD FINAL VERSION
(Added 5/30/09) - Now compatible with any version of DirectX 9.0c.

http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?vehqmgkwk1l

The only controls for the main game: click! And figure stuff out .
Controls for the level editor are given when you run it.

Gameplay:

The basic engine for this is a gravity demo I wrote for the DBP Coding Challenges some time ago. In each level, the player must destroy the enemy station by launching mines at it. This task is complicated by several factors, though: the craft can only carry a limited number of these advanced mines, nearby planets can pull the mines off-course with their gravitational fields, and the aliens have erected laser walls around much of the solar system that will deflect or destroy mines.

I'll post a demo once I've got a working level editor and made a few levels with it (shouldn't be too far off). Trust me, it isn't all that fun to play right now

Its odd how you never seem to enjoy your own game as much as everyone else seems to....

No probs, just as long as its not too far off =)

Hehe, that is true. Probably because the programmer tests it so much that they just get tired of looking at it

Cool concept, should make for some fun. Will gravity be a major piece of your strategy? Be cool to launch mines near a gravitational field to have it swing around and hit a target on the other side.

So far graphics look clean and easy to understand. How are the controls going to be handled? For me, mini-games that only require the use of the mouse are more fun then having to use one hand on the mouse and the other hitting key-combination

Good luck with your entry.

Can you drive a hovercraft/boat using only the mouse?? If so I'll make it that way =)

Indeed, it will involve lots of slingshotting and bouncing .

Well, cool, because right now the only controls are pointing and clicking to launch mines, and it's probably going to stay that way (the minelayer is immobile)

Sure - move the mouse left and right to steer and click to accelerate. I've seen a few games done that way.

Indeed - the orange ones destroy mines, the blue ones cause them to bounce.

I love shoot em ups if it is half as good as geometry wars you could be on a winner.

Thanks Jammy! Unfortunately this isn't a lot like Geometry wars - it's more of a puzzle game then an action shoot-em-up. I'll post a demo in a few days and you can see

Okay, that's good to know, I thought they were just easy because I've been playing the game so much

Did you try out the level editor? See if you can make some harder levels

Meh, I have level writer's block . But I uploaded a new version of the game with some new levels. This version also fixes several rather serious glitches with the mine bouncing and polishes up the GUI and all that.

Runtime Error 118 - Array does not exist or array subscript out of bounds at line 930

Might help ya debug a bit, got the error whilst playing, when one of the level's finished.

Suggestion:
perhaps having a retry instead of just returning to the menu
Created my own level but sadly got the ball trapped lol, perhaps having a life timer on the ball? So even if it does get stuck you can still continue the game.

looking good so far must get back to creating mine heh

Thanks for the error catch! I fixed it . Also implemented your retry suggestion.

If the mine got stuck while you were testing in the editor, you can just right-click to cancel the test. I will add something of that sort in the game that allows you to kill back to the menu or somesuch.

Thanks for testing, don't seem to get many people around this board

Yea, i just ain't been on it in a while busy with uni work etc.., I like the implementation of the level editor perhaps have this in the main game exe as well instead of two separate files, then just a menu to either one?

Up to you though how you like your game style ^-^

It's nice to see that you are putting some of my images to good use However, you seem to be giving me more credit than I deserve ... I don't remember creating a 'mine image'.

It's a resized version of one of your star images . I'll clear that up.
