Dear All,

I'm having great difficulties with smoothing models in milkshape. I have a mesh as a single welded group, all set to a single smoothing group (group 2). When I weld all vertices together in milkshape the model looks smoothed...but then I try and export it using the JT exporter it dutifully unwelds any two vertices which have different UV coordinates. The result is sharp edges.

Does anyone know a way around this problem? The answer isn't to set object smoothing in DBPro btw.

Many thanks,
Matt

Hey Grumpy, let me see if I have this right: You have multiple parts of your mesh and you have connected them (like a leg to a torso). But every time you export it using JT Export it... does it disconnect the weld? Or does it just take away the smoothing group?

Any chance we can get some pics to help us understand?

Hi Sinister,

Thanks for replying.

Originally the whole mesh was a single mesh. However, to unwrap the UV I regrouped the mesh into several parts and set the UV coordinates using the texture coordinate editor. I then rewelded the vertex joints and set the whole mesh to a single smoothing group (group 2). Once I have used the JT exporter it separates welded vertexes. The JT exporter doesn't separate the smoothing group.

I've uploaded an image of the problem. It shows before and after using the exporter and the UV coordinate map.

Any suggestions gratefully welcomed.

Matt

Hmmm... I'm not really sure. I'm wondering if this problem lies within JT Export. I'm weary of the procedure you took though, and I'm thinking that their is some issues that have yet to be fixed left over from it. If you don't mind, would you mind either posting up or sending me your model? 3DSM can easily import .obj, or .3ds. If you can get it to me in that form, broken or original, I'll see if I can find the issue. What file type do you want the model in? I might be able to put it that for you better than JT Export can.

Let me know.

This is one of many models with the same problem But thanks for the offer. I guess I will just have to play around some more to identify exactly what the problem is. Start simple to see if I can fix it!

Thanks for the offer anyway mate.

Try to not disconnecting the mesh when UV Mapping it. There should be a way to do it without having to split it all up. If you absolutely have to, clone the whole model, UV Map it, and then put the mapping coordinates on the original just to make sure you didn't screw up any data sewing things back together.

Check out UV Layout. They have a demo version that's good for 30 days (you can keep redownloading it). Export your model as an .obj, import it in UV Layout, make your cuts (see tutorials on site for how), and then export it out again. It makes UV mapping a lot easier. 3DSM's UV Mapping gives me a headache.
