I would like to start making scrolling and RPG games. Asumming my game takes up all of the screen, what would be good sizes for my sprites? I would like to start editing sprites but have no clue what size to make my characters, bosses, and levels. Also, what are some free sprite editing software? Thank you.

Most spriters actually use MS Paint, as far as I know. I use GIMP too, so I can compare animation frames. One thing you should know about using paint is to never use the default colors.
Back to the main question, I think the size of the Namco X Capcom sprites would be fitting. Here's a link:b
