Hi there,
I made a little tutorial on how to fake UV-mapping with Sketchup and some paint program.
Tutorial is in .doc format.
You will need the free unfold plugin for Sketchup:
http://sketchuptips.blogspot.com/2007/08/plugin-unfoldrb.html
Have fun and create soething cool.

I am Jacks complete lack of surprise.

the other way around, my tute in short:
1)make a building
1a)group parts of it together with a sense for overlapping faces
2)flatten the groups with the free unfold plugin(do this to a COPY!of your building)
3)export the 2 dimensional pieces as image to a graphics app.
4)paint on your flat pieces,
5) re-import the map to Sketchup and wrap around your original.

rem:It is still a tedious process but it helped me a lot to figure out how to texture more complex geometry.
attached is a map i did this way, and following the rendered object....

Hi daarboven,

First to request excuses to leave the subject of post.

Second to thank for the great tutorial in the Official Community Guide to FPSC: "Sketchup to FPSC"

I have gone to the Link: http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=131886&b=25

And I have tried to download The Great Village but the File in Rapidshare has been deleted.

Please, Upload again!!! This is helpful for which until now we are beginning.

Third, sorry for my english. :p

Thanks.

Why would you want to UV Map with Sketchup?

Why would I NOT want to? I really like the Program, it's free and easy to use...So no need for a third party solution just to skin some props....Besides it's simple fun to find out how far you can stretch and bend it.

Hey, sorry about the post hijack, but I have a quick question, daarboven... Could you maybe drop me a link with that old "test" level you made for the "proof of design" on Sketchup as a level editor? That would be great if you could

Because it's A) It's not designed to make game assets, or levels. It was created as a quick mock up program and as aid to architects B) It's difficult to port the work over to other file types that are compatible with DB (last time I checked), and the textures don't come out right to boot. and C) It's hard to UV Map your stuff

Why go against the grain? No need for a third party solution? You just posted a link to a plugin. Even then, it takes a really odd method to get results. Why not use a free tool such a blender that people know, support, can help you with if you have questions, respect, has good documentation, great community and all the tools you need? Seems like common sense. I don't get the people who come to this board using programs like this. Then they wonder why no one replies to them.

A) Doesn't matter, if it does the job.

B) Daarboven has proven that it is possible, with great results (he has a test level somewhere around here).

C) That is also untrue.

I reply to him all the time (occasionally via e-mail), as do other people...mainly FPSC users.

Just because it's not something you prefer to use, doesn't mean you get to knock it at every opportunity. I don't know of any modeler that started out for the sole purpose of creating levels in games (not talking about level designers, such as Hammer or Quark).

Offering your personal preference in level design tools is fine; but why are you constantly knocking down someone's effort to use a tool in an unorthodox, yet effective way?

A: I believe what Sid is trying to say is that you could do more things faster for this kind of thing in other programs than Sketchup, seeing as it wasn't designed to be used for this kind of thing.
B: Okay? His point still stands.
C: Maybe it's not "hard" so to say, it probably is just easier in other softwares.

He's not knocking, the fact is that if the person would try and actually learn a heavier so to say app he/she probably get better results.

Then again, I probably shouldn't be eligible to post, seeing as I have no experience with Sketchup what so ever.

Well; feel free to post; but you said it yourself. Before assuming it's easier in other programs, try it yourself.

Well if you need a plugin just to UV Map something I'd assume it is easier in other softwares.

I use Ultimate Unwrap 3D for all my UV Mapping...that's a pretty big plugin, I'd say. It does many things other program's UV Mappers don't...including importing and exporting numerous game formats.

A) Yes it does matter. I don't really care if he wants to make things really difficult on himself by using a program that isn't designed to do what he's doing. It does matter though we he asks for help. Hardly anyone here uses Sketch Up, and even fewer people care about finding a round about way to texture in it. Call me stuck up, whatever. But I can't take someone's questions, or work, seriously if they are still using Tinker Toys and the rest of us are using Lego's. I know it's a really dickish thing to say, but that's how I view it. I'm sure a few other's here judge the same.

B) I guess I'll just restate my point since it wasn't really challenged. Great, he's proven that it's possible. Guess what? The wheel has already been invented! Why fight with Sketch Up when you can use another free program that is more powerful, has more features, a better GUI, and better support? I understand, it's his preference. But you have to admit, it's a really illogical preference for what he's trying to do. At least give me that.

Maybe I missed where it wasn't hard. Hard was the wrong term. I would like to change that to lengthy and unnecessary. Even with your Ultimate Unwrap software, it's easier than that. I can do all of that with Max or Blender! On a side note: Yeah, pretty much what ever program you use, a third party unwrapper will pretty much be easier. I hate Max's unwrap. I hear Softimage's and, I think it was Maya's, are good. Zbrush as well(?).

In the end. Whatever. I've already wasted too much of my time debating why jr. here is wasting his time in Sketch Up. If you can get Sketch Up to bow to you, more power to you. I'll be using 3DSM in the meantime.

If you're reffering to Blender's GUI as "better" than other's...well, we'll have to agree to disagree. But I do agree on the power of Blender.

That's pretty assuming and condescending.

Not everyone can afford $3,500 for a program (or even the student pricing)...those that don't pirate it, that is. Have fun with it.

Nah, wasn't specifically referring to it. Yeah, it's confusing, I'll grant you that. It's just like every other GUI though. You have to learn it and master it. Hotkeys are nice, you don't have to fiddle with the GUI as much. Every GUI has it's pitfalls. I look at Zbrush's GUI and wimper, but I know I have to move past that on a professional level and use it anyway. Using the GUI as an excuse for not using a powerful engine like that seems sort of lame. But I understand why it would be a point that one would way the decision on. Blender's not the only good tool though! Truespace is being used a lot on these boards. I see some people using Wings 3D, some use Anim8tor (not a fav of mine). Milkshape is only $20.

That pretty much sums it up for uhmh... software.

Sorry pal, I seem to have stepped on your toes in another life then....SketchUp to me is jet another free 3d modelling app I use with some fun 'cause it is really easy to use (and some success when you care to look at some of my other threads here). I know it is hard for pros like you when people here waste valuable forum space with tips and tricks which are obviously not for use for the killer apps you work with....
