Today we have released a new product called Abyssal Engine.

The Abyssal Engine is a powerful professional game creation tool kit and rendering system for creating quality games. All aspects of the technology is designed to reduce development time while empowering developers with a strong suite of tools they need to produce great visual effects and immersive worlds.

Downloads are available that allow you to try out the tools included in this system. There's also a tech demo and two high resolution videos to watch.

TGC didn't develop this software they are just selling it. This looks pretty nice though, I remember trying this out a while ago.

(And unless you've figured it out already, I agree; it seems to be really something).

This is from Solstar? So they are selling their engine through you? Like Realm Crafter?

What was this made in? DBPro? DGDK? C++ and D3D? C++ and GL? FreeBASIC? Java? LOLCODEZ?

Cheers,

Note that, however, I'm not totally sure about whether or not it also supports Direct3D, as it DOES support DirectAudio.

You can get a more detailed impression of the engine and its features here.

I just want to say that although it looks really cool, it is an unfortunate name for an engine. I initially read it as Abysmal Engine

TGC really need to be more imaginative with their names, I think. First there was iBlow, and now Abysmal engine?

Looks really awesome.

Well they didn't name it, they are merely reselling it(which takes little effort to do and gets them free money).

Hopefully this added revenue from all these newly resold products will go toward improving DBPro/GDK etc .

As for the engine, at a glance it looks nice I guess... but as it's C++(at least I think it is), I don't really see why I'd use this over Ogre or something similar, but I guess it's not aimed at me so whatever.

Me too.

My sight is getting so bad I soon won't be able to tell whether or not my shader demos are working.

Edit Forgot to add: nice screenshots. Something for the rest of us to aim for.

Had a play with the tech demo. It doesnt blow my socks off (which I didn't expect it to), but what it does have is massive LOD terrain with texture blending. This is still something DBP really needs, in my opinion. Maybe we'll see a LOD terrain engine one day in DBP? Until then, this engine seems to fit the bill for people who want to base games on massive terrains.

It looks good, but it doesn't really compare with Unity, or Visual 3D.NET or Leadwerks etc.

I also read it as Abysmal Engine...

Is it scripting or drag and drop?
Any code examples?

The demo is nicer looking than any of the demos I've seen from those. It looks professional. Those others look indy.

It looks fantastic and runs well on my PC, unfortunately the tools trial did not impress me at all, so I won't be purchasing it.

They're both indy, so's this one, the other two have quite a professional quality to them - given they're very well put together and are capable of high quality material. I'm assuming this too.

For 'professional' you're looking at an aweful lot of money.

However, demos aren't everything, the Unity3D demo isn't as nice (the Abyssal Engine Tech Demo 'looks' nicer, but all you're really doing is exploring a scene), but the tutorials you start off with help you get you through to getting a good quality demo made. Leadwerks has a good set of tutorials to show you how to get started and help you understand how everything works so you get the most of the features. If you can get kicked off into making something higher in quality, then I see more purpose in a trial than something as superficial as demo.

Saying that, I've not yet downloaded the trial for this, nor am I shooting it down (it looks quite good and well, TGC give their thumbs up. ), but it sounds as though it's the tech demo that's impressed you over the two alternatives you've highlighted.

turn off Anti Aliasing on your 3d card. With AA turned off I get 50+ FPS outdoors and 100+ indoors.

What the tech demo actually is is a section of an Online MMO World but running offline. It's a huge level to render..

Hallo there,

is there any possibility to create AIs in Abyss like in FPSC ?
The engine looks good, but without AIs the gameplay would be a litte dull.
Is there any plan for including AIs in the next or an enhanced version?

All the best from Vienna,

This is definitely not a drag and drop engine, but a more seriuos approach to programming. I wish there was a page or guide that compared DBPro's features to Abyssal Engine features. I mean the screen hold up, but what my concern is raw power for my up comign game. I am trying to develop a 3D hack n slash using DBPro, it is staggering the work that DBPro will require my friend and myself talents to get the game running well and at a better than crawl pace.

A little bit more detailed features would help this product a lot.

Looks awesome, infact, there may be a spare spot in my computer case

Four-ish questions.

i)Is it designed like FPS Creator for example (i know nothing about coding)
ii)Is custom media supported/do you have to play as that crumby little dwarf character
iii)Vista compatability?
iv)Are the FPSC model packs importable in any way/will it need something extra to create custom media into it (Modeler/Uv Mapper/Texturing Program)

Dowloading trial now - looks good

Agreed, there's no real information which would even make me consider shelling out the cash for the engine. With some more information and more than a few screenshots, this could be a product I consider.

To my knowledge, no, it's nothing like FPS Creator, it's pure code.

I don't think we'll ever know, TGC probably doesn't want to admit this was a marketing failure. You can still get it from the official homepage.
