I'm not stupid. All I wanted was 3DS MAX, but the price list I got only had some stupid 'superpack', so I just got that.

I agree. I'm using Blender ATM, and I'm more than proficient using it, but it doesn't seem the most 'stable' of modeling packages. MAX seems to be supported to a greater degree, and less likely to completely stab me in the back while modeling (as Blender has done a plethora of times).

I'm confused about the difference between a student license and a commercial license. I mean, SamHH from the FPSC boards makes stuff with MAX (student edition) and then sells it. Is that legal?
