I decided to make a shotgun for FPSC X10 that's really simple. So, here's what I got so far (just the sketchup of it)...

This type of thing is fine if posted in 3D chat, but you really do need an ngame screen to post here. Sorry.

Alright. Thanks for reminding me. My bad. Hey, moderators, could you move this thread to 3D chat until I actually try to get the weapon working in FPSC X10? Thanks.

I suggest giving it some rounder edges

Thanks, I'll round the edges. I'll post a photo soon. I was having some problems making the cocking mechanism of the shotgun. Not technical errors, but design errors. Any suggestions to how I should make it?

Here, I got the edges a little more round. I'll round it off more soon. If you want more pictures, let me know.

Alright, I got the edges rounder and the muzzle more detailed. By the way, is this thread ever going to be moved to 3D chat? Just wondering. Any more suggestions?

Also, I doubt you'll see much of the muzzle, so the extra detail isnt a necessity

Or Anim8or, it doesn't have nearly the possibilities but it's very easy and you can still get great results. (and blender is hard for some people to learn... well it takes a while)
As for the gun, it could use some more rounded edges and it seems to wide.

I just got AC3D and that's what I started using to create stuff. I don't need 'blender'. AC3D is a whole bunch better. You should get AC3D.

You need to post better screenshots. Most of them are taken from a strange angle right next to the gun, and many of them have scribbling all over them; it's not important that we know where the bullets go for us to critique the model. Can you post some better pictures? Try taking them from the side, or post some wireframes. Right now it looks like two boxes with some high-poly cylinders on top.

Thank you.

I have 3D Studio Max. I pwn you all

Google sketchup is not made for game modeling. It's bad for sketching something up 3d really fast. A few architectural places use it, but it's not a standard by any means.

1. Shotgun is to wide and is it made with plains? theres gaps betwen the sides..

2. Ac3d is not better than blender, and how would you know if you've never used blender before?

I think that really depends on what you are doing most of the time. If you are making high poly models and trying to make something very realistic then blender is the way to go. But, if you just want to whip something up quick like a gun then AC3D i would think is better just because of a simpler interface (although i prefer ani8mor) And, blender's interface is confusing especially for someone that is using Google Sketchup to make a model (no offense)

The shotgun looks quite good, but I just want to tell you all something: It doesn't matter what you use, the best thing is if you like the program and feel comfortable with it. So stop telling people to get this or that, it's their own choice!
Hope this post isn't too rant-ish, just wanted to say that.

Best.

He's in animation college so I'm guessing he has the student discount thing.

We use Maya at school. Despite taking all features into acount, I must say it's a pretty horrible program. Occasional hang-ups, features stop working (booleans often do, sometimes even highlighting, especially in the UV-editor). Booleans often don't work properly for good reason, but there's no excuse for random crashes, certainly not if it's amongst the line-up of industry standard programs.
But I guess I've had a few too many bad days with it. Sometimes, it does work flawlessly and very well.

I recommend any beginner that hasn't decided for an app yet to go with Wings3D. It's free, free for commercial use and when you've learned it, it's great to work with. Sure, it's not super-advanced, but for modelling, it definetly does the trick.

I've been using Maya every single day for about 1 and a half year now and I've never experienced a single of those things.

@Bergice and Alucard: Yup, student discount. 13-month license for $100.

Quote: "Blenders interface is only confusing for someone who doesn't want to learn it."

Yup. Agreed.

Let there be no mistake, and I will say this for the last time. Google Sketch Up is not a game modeling program. It is used for fast drafting and initial conceptualization of designs, especially for architecture. I use it for a fast draft of environment layouts, but I could even just do that in Max.

If you are currently trying to use Sketch Up, please stop being a noob and learn Blender. It's really not all that difficult. What it comes down to is laziness. There is a crap ton of tutorials, books, and online resources that can help you learn blender in half a day.

If you are using Sketch Up, I can not take you seriously. I'm sorry. And I don't mean to be a jerk about it, but I simply won't take time out of my day to help you troubleshoot your stuff because your doing it in the wrong program.

That sucks. By the way Toasty, I saw one of your threads, the one with the kind of cartoonic tank. Don't remember what it was called, but seemed pretty cool.
