Animated gifs don't load, and I searched but the solution given is to play an animation to an image and texture a box with it, but that doesn't work either. Any help?

I'm not sure what you're trying to do--could you explain a little better? Do you want to load GIFs, as your title implies, or do you want to play an animation on a 3D object?

Are you expecting animated gifs to be animated automatically in your project?

I am trying to put an animated .gif onto the screen (as a sprite, maybe), but the technique I tried to use doesn't work...

But when you put it on the screen do you expect it to be animated? Animated gifs aren't an automated thing. Whatever is displaying it needs to not only read the initial image but also the interval spacing that controls the speed of the animation and deal with the information that tells which parts of the image need to be redrawn. Your application has to do the animation.

You're essentially reading a gif into an image. Nothing in Dark GDK is prepared for this kind of processing.

In DBPro you can use gif's loading them as animations (like loading a video) as you said, but this functionalty was removed in DarkGDK
