Just post it on the NOOBS Wanted thread. And it doesn't have to be an analogue clock anymore. You can do that, or any other program you can write quickly that displays your coding level, so that we can give you appropriate jobs. The clock is always nice though. Try to keep it simple though, less media if you can, so that we can cut and paste, but if you need media, just zip everything up and post it on the thread.

I think we should stick with the clock but i'll reword the challenge so people just submit the best clock they can do (analogue being the best). It's such a standardised program to make and tests a lot of areas so I think it's ideal. It's like the omlette of the coding world (chefs get new cooks to make them an omlette to test their skills)

I figure I'd put it on this thread since it came up.

I'm sorry, but I find the clock a discouragingly difficult first challenge. When I started, I didn't know arrays, or sine and cosine. I do now, but I didn't before. I think the challenge should be toned down a bit, to something that can be done simply, but can also be done brilliantly. Perhaps attempting to revise a program to make it run faster, or anything which displays the person's skill level, without setting a standard.

That was the original idea behind the "or a program that demonstrates your skill". Obese is right, though, we need a single program that people can make, but I do agree with you Irojo.

Ideas anyone?

I'll take that on board and try and think of some way to make the challenge accessible to more noobs.
If you or BN2 or anyone else involved in DarkNoobs comes up with a good test then post it on the noobs wanted thread and we'll discuss it.
The challenge needs to accomodate a wide skill range, while maintaining strong base principles so that entries can be directly compared.

I agree, although you don't need to know sin or cosine to do a clock program because darkbasic has the command Newxvalue and newzvalue which do most of that for you.

to apear in a random order but not repeated.
like 10,1,6,2,9,3,8,7,4,5
or get 10 random numbers 1-100 but not repeated

good question. To make sure you didn't pick the same number twice you'd need to store the numbers you choose, THIS is a good example of using an array
We have two options (that i can think of) for how we use our arrays; monitoring the source or monitoring the destination.

To monitor the source we'd make an array that stores whether each number has been chosen
dim num(100)
So num(0-100) would start off with a value of 0 (unpicked), we'd get a random number and check the array for the status of that number

The repeat loop forces DB to keep picking random numbers until it finds one that is unpicked. Now we have picked it this number is marked as picked (num(n)=1), therefore next time we use the picking loop we wont pick that number again.
Source monitoring is ideal for a game with more than one player where unique numbers are required.

sorry i have to double post i have a word limit

Destination monitoring stores the numbers as they are dealt and compares new numbers to this array, the benefit of this method is you don't have to monitor every single number, just the ones in play.

Instead of being 1 or 0 like the source monitoring, this array stores the actual numbers that are picked; the number of elements are how many numbers will be picked. I've set their initial values to -1 which will represent unpicked, so we can pick a 0.

I'm sure there's a much more elegant way of doing it but that should work. It picks 10 numbers and compares the pick to the previous picks (for x= 1 to num), you dont have to go any higher than the current num because those numbers havent been picked yet.
