I'm trying to figure out how I should go about making a space ship. Should I use prims (squares, spheres, and the like) and piece it all together with 4000 of them? Or should I just use one big box and add/edit vertices? I also want it so that you can walk around inside of the ship. So total interior and everything. (and I know that other objects like chairs/tabels are seperate objects.)

So one big item edited like crazy, 4000 prims, or some other way?

Using Blender. If there's anything better let me know.

Depends on the model, I usually sketch something from an orthographic view and begin with a box, extrude it a billion times and mould it to my sketch. I then add some proper depth and begin shaping all the major features then removing wasted verts and adding finer details. You don't want to make it using only primitives without modification.

so if we assume that you extrude 2 poly faces at a time..your average models are over 2 billion polys!?

...insane

Chaddica:
like dc said, start with a sketch of your ship. maybe a side view and a top view for reference.

or if you want to be able to move inside the ship, might be a good idea to design a basic layout of your ship; cockpit, engines, reactor, crew quarters, dining area, etc...then mold a hull around that design.

It all boils down to a good well thought out design.

well yes that actually makes sense josh, although time consuming you would inevitably lead to a better model. I dont think that youv seen any of dc's ships have you?

look around for them there amazing, i really cant be bothered doing the leg work atm so search for em.

I have seen them He actually won one of the competitions I held several years ago with his recreation of the 'Lost in Space' ship. I've also played several of his 'space' games. I was just being my weird self.
