How do you fade the screen from black to white, vice versa?

There's one way to do this that I use to make the screen "fade", but it could be different from what you're asking. Can you give an example?

The screen fades in from white to black, black to white, and fades out from white to black, and black to white.

Could you pull it off by playing a video? Or are you talking about lighting? I'm sorry, I'm still unsure of what you're asking.
