I’m totally new to 3D game programming, DarkGDK has been totally killer in helping me get a handle on this kind of programming! So, I am very, very inexperienced.

What I’m wondering is, is there a specific technique involved for updating textures dynamically based on what portion of the object the user is seeing? I’m thinking in terms of the way Google Earth updates the textures as you zoom in, only obviously on a much smaller scale.

If someone could just point me in a general direction, I’d appreciate it. I’m sure it’s fairly complex.

What you are describing is LOD: Level of Detail. What you do (in essence) is make the objects that are close to you high poly and the further away the object gets, the lower detail it is.
