Hi there ive been using dark gdk for a while now and want to move onto to actually personalising my game as appose to using the default stuff.

i want to add my own map. this includes adding buildings and trees and whatever all in one model with third party software. what software is good to create my own map? Ive been using carrara 6 but it doesnt seem to do what i want.

then how do i actually put it into my game? whats the syntax to load my own map into my game?

Thanks in advance.

Sorry didn't know you were looking for something free. But, try google. Not sure if you'll find what you want though.

Will google sketch up do? (i have not tried google sketch up so let me know )
Or
Have you tried the Softimage Mod Tool, it has a built in terrain maker. Obviously you can't use it commercially but for testing it would be alright.
Or
T.Ed is brilliant for making terrain and for placing buildings, it does cost around £18.
Or
You can code the entire world into it by making a heightmap and colourmap. One of the tutorials walks you through this i believe under the name "Terrain"
Here are some terrain makers that i have found:
http://freeworld3d.org/
http://www.earthsculptor.com/
http://www.pnp-terraincreator.com/user.php?section=License
(this one looks really good because you can make maps with the free edition and still use it commercially. the link is to the comparison of the different sorts you can get)

Do not use sketch up! Sketch up in general is not good for games. And i highly suggest not using heightmaps just because it's a lot of guess and check until you get it right.

WOW that was fast, i wasn't sure with google sketch up, i have only really just heard about it which is why i asked.
"heyufool1" is totally right about the heightmaps bit, it does require a LOT of trial and error.
