Since I'll be going to college in the fall for Computer Animation and the school uses Maya, I thought I would download the Maya 8.5 PLE to start learning the basics now. I had gotten it before on a whim but it was lost when I had to reformat my HDD. Now, Autodesk has decided to stop making PLEs of Maya and has moved to the 30-day trial, which is hardly useful at all for my purposes. Any legitimate sites purporting Maya PLE only link to the old Autodesk page, which no longer exists. I can't even find torrents of it (though there are several cracked full versions), and I'm not sure whether it would be illegal if there did exist such a torrent, since the PLEs are freeware.

I have found the student version, which is well within my budget. However, I imagine even the "perpetual" license offered there is only a single-user one, and I would be installing that on a laptop to take to college with me, rather than the home desktop I am using now.

Anyway, my real question is: Does anyone know of a legal download site for Maya 8.5 PLE?

I bought a book awhile back that came with Maya PLE--'Game Art for Teens, Second Edition', I think--and I'm sure it's still on sale, although I'm not sure if you want to spend 35 bucks on a book just to get the software that comes with it. And it may be a much older version.

Unfortunately they got rid of it, probably when Maya merged with Autodesk, although I'm not sure exactly when. Even if you did manage to get your hands on it, that version and edition would probably handle different than the current edition. I'd recommend going with the free 30-day trial or getting the student edition. Some schools actually provide licenses for home use for the duration of the program. You might want to ask your school if they do such a thing, or offer even bigger discounts that Autodesk does.

Check this out too, this is where I ordered my 13 month Max license from: http://www.journeyed.com/itemDetail.asp?ItmNo=80046473

Okay, I've emailed my school about getting the student version now, before classes start. I did notice a $400 "technology fee" on the list they gave me, which would cover the cost of the perpetual student license.

Ha! Found it: http://www.brothersoft.com/autodesk-maya-download-65951.html

Downloading now, hopefully I can dig up some tutorials on it too. One of my dad's coworker's sons used Maya and is now graduated from college, so maybe I can borrow one of his books.

EDIT: Ech, download speed is only 35.0 KB/s, for a 240MB file.

EDIT2: The download's been moved, correct link is http://www.brothersoft.com/autodesk-maya-software-243123.html

That is incorrect, they simply disbanded the PLE by the release of the 2009 anniversary version, it has nothing to do with the Alias>Autodesk merge.

Well, I also had the P.L.E for a while, but my HDD crashed and I'm getting a new MacBook Pro. The only problem with the P.L.E is that you need a serial code to activate it, which is not available anymore. Luckily, I saved a text document with my codes, (both Mac and Win) so if I find a download file for OSX when I get my new computer I will use it. I've also looked at the student licenses, I must say they seem a lot cheaper here in Europe... +/- 100€ for the same superpack you found a link for... OMG.

Best. (Long post? Sorry...)

First tutorial finished!

I kinda like the interface (not as much as Blender of course). The only downside is the watermarks on renders and shaded viewports, but I got what I paid for, I guess. Hopefully my professor will reply to my email about getting the student version soon... You can't import any PLE projects into the full version, so I can't really do any serious work beyond tutorials at this point.

Still a dumb move though. The PLE basically fed them users as they grew up with it. Thanks for clearing that up

Indeed, I need to research why they actually did disband it, surely they can't expect new students to learn the software in 30 days.
