I recommend giving the trial version of UV Layout a shot. I can't stand Max's UVW mapping most of the time and use that instead. Just export to .obj, import into UVLayout, export again when done, import back into Max and everything is fun, fast, and friendly.

Really? I got MAX yesterday, and compared to Blender it's UV unwrapper is an absolute godsend.

As time goes on, I do like it a bit more. But once you've done unwrapping in UVLayout you never want to go back. Especially with it's anti-distortion calculations. The only thing I have yet to figure out about UVLayout is how to fix it warping UV's sometimes. But that can be fixed with a great script called TexTools. http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/textools-uv-toolbox-for-the-texture-artist Really good tools on that. Check it out.
