first off, this is well on it's way to being a very fun game. i never get tired of racing games and the artistic style used here makes it "extra" fun. i appreciate the regular vocal chatter, sound effects, and the soundtrack is perfect for the game adding to the whole "this is a race! step on it!" vibe.

of note:

the physics are unforgiving. colliding with the slightest obstacle can cause your Kart to flip over and spin 180 degs** (even when hitting something as visually minimal as small curb-like obstacles or sometimes just touching the dirt/mud/getting off track in the slightest). **when the Kart is facing the wrong way, it would be nice to have an arrow pointing the right way or some other kind of indication since things are happening pretty fast, it's easy to get disoriented.

the lack of a Reverse gear sometimes means you can't continue the race as more than once i found myself facing a boulder or in one of the enviromental "holes" (see pic) with no chance of righting my Kart. also, i found myself driving on the side of a "rail" a couple times, and upside down once (is this intentional?).

at some point my Kart simply froze in place (this happened more than once) for minutes before i just shut the app down; is that a Freeze "power-down" (looks like "ice" and then goes to a Dragon pic for a couple seconds) ? - no fun! and, once, the camera focused on an AI racer for a second so i hit SPACE (didn't know what else to do ) which caused the game to exit (i don't think there's an End of Race implemented yet, so...?)

anyway, it IS fun, and becoming more fun the more i play it. i look forward to standard game-pad controllers being implemented, config file functionality so i don't have to set up manually each time, the removal of forced PS3 attempts to load up, more tracks, and some documentaion.

thanks for sharing!

Looks good. I got an error message (which annoyingly i can't copy and paste from...) - i clicked on the .exe in the folder.

RoshiKartDemo: RoshiKartDemo.exe - Unable To Locate Component

This application has failed to start because d3dx9_37.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

Virtual Nomad- Thank you for a very Detailed and Honest review! I never realised the ps3 exe would do that without the actual Lib installed i will have to sort that out straight away! I am writing a To do list now!! I really appreciate the comments and i hope you continue to play the game and dont be afraid to tell me anymore faults

DR Tank- Hi thanks for downloading the demo!, I think the D3dx9_37 file is because you havnt updated your Direct x recently? im not to sure but i think thats whats wrong

OK i updated direct x. Now getting other messages. One about the ps3 driver (which i didn't install - i have no ps3). Game seemed to keep working despite that. Then it crashed and opened up the nvidia driver website. I'm guessing i need to get PhysX. Back in a tick..

Hi Dr tank, Having to get the physx drivers can be a pain but until i get an install file which will install directx 9.0c,Physx drivers and the game all in the one go, each set of drivers will have to be downloaded individually, they can be easily got though from my website at the downloads page if you just scroll down alittle further past the demo download. As for the Ps3 error just ignore that for now, i already gave that a quick fix so it doesnt automatically appear when the game starts now but only for people who download the full demo again, whenever i release the v0.2, there will be both a full download and just an exe patch for people who have already downloaded v0.1. hope you get it working.

@Dr Tank - if you DO have the latest DirectX 9.0C installed, google d3dx9_37.dll and drop it in your "C:\Windows\System32" folder. i've had to do similar with a couple directx DLL's since running on Vista (64).

@Darkowen - ok, back with a quick update on feedback. this time i hit one of the "start line" poles and the camera imediately changed focus and i let it sit there awhile while i watched the race. eventually it quit following that racer and started following others, then found some fixed positions to view the race from. SO! i now see that it's actually a feature of the game, these various camera positions/perspectives. and, i'm also assuming that since my hitting a pole triggered this camera work, i had destroyed my Kart? Should there be a damage indicator? anyway, a little insight on the game's functionality would be nice so we can distinguish potential bugs from features

watching the race:

also, i thought i found that there was, indeed, a Reverse gear as when i got stuck i tried to work my way out using the not-so-slippery sliding collision. well, when i released the upkey and just used the left/right keys, the Kart backed up (and was steer-able) and i was able to get racing again. alas, i was only able to do that once since subsequent attempts didn't back me up at all. maybe i had some space to gain speed the first time and then the Kart was actually bouncing backward instead of actually backing up?

anyway, some more info on what's implemented would be a big help when testing funcionality. and, i'm happy to hear you're taking feedback offered as the completely constructive criticism(s) intended.

Hi Virtual Nomad- I dont think crashing into the post was supposed to do anything other than make you crash back, i will have to see that for myself, When the camera follows the other characters its basically just an end Race camera view, there is nothing really there to tell you that the race is finished other than the fact you arnt racing anymore lol, I now realise too that if you use the CTRL key while stopped the kart should reverse, on the gamepad the kart reverse's with the brake button when idle. Your kart cant actually get damaged in the game, only stunned by weapons. Thanks again for your indepth help.

A few extra things you might want to know,

-If the kart revs at about 30-35 when the race starts you should get a boost.

-The dragon appearing at the last race is a random event, which gives you random power ups for the items or certain events. For now the only power up is, a double boost speed time, your boosts will last twice as long.

OK so i got it working. Pretty cool, but quite buggy.

It moans about the PS3 pad thing. If you go to options, then exit (having selected keyboard), if you try and go to options again, it just flickers, and puts the cursor back to the top menu option. If you selected pad (and i don;t have one), when you next try to go to menu again it does nothing, but continually pops up error messages. From here i could only start the game, and with no pad could not go anywhere!

I got stuck on scenery- right path through the "woods", just off the left side of the road, touching a tree. Had to restart.

For some reason i got frozen after the finish of a lap for what seemed like ages. A snake appeared on the screen just before.

So basically good stuff, but it needs some work.

Dr Tank- Thanks for trying out the demo, Il work on those bugs for the next update!, Im starting to think people dont understand about the Dragon on the last lap, its kinda a Time freeze scene where it shows you a special upgrade you get for your weapons etc, I will have to concider if its a good option to make it freeze or not. Cheers mate for your comments

It might not be a bad feature. You just need to make it more obvious to the player what's happening. I have the same problem - you play your own game a lot and everything seems obvious. I guess that's what playtesting is for.

thanks for the update! i'd been out of town for a few days and was happy to see some progress on this one when i returned home.

some feedback:

1) thanks for adding the "wrong way!" feature. i know you're still dialing this in but i want to mention that i think it's a little too sensitive right now as i once hit a tree and backed up just a little (BIG thanks for adding the reverse gear!) to correct myself and it (the "wrong way!" message) popped up immediately. i would suggest adding a WrongWay_Timer variable and give it a couple/few seconds before the notification triggers.

2) physics tweaks noted and appreciated. i don't remember losing speed when i was travelling uphill before (? maybe this was always there but since Boost is now adjusted, it's more noticable). alas, i still found myself "high centered" on a curb**, unable to move at all (forward or backward). also, i actually rolled all the way over** once leaving me to die under the sun like a tortoise (tho they can sometimes roll themselves right-side up ).

this made me want to suggest an "i'm stuck!" feature that will relieve a lot of the current physics frustrations (tho the causes should still be considered). many games will check for this (especially games with huge maps where, no matter how much testing is done, noone can guarentee every inch of a map is passable or free of sticky points). so, perhaps, a check every second to compare current x/z coords to prior x/z coords and if the player hasn't moved far enough (dunno your world scale, so you decide what "stuck" is) in, say, 5 seconds, declare the player "stuck" and reposition/reset the player to a "safe" position on the track.

and, finally,

3) the newly added "race result" needs a little scrutiny as the "current place" indicator didn't match the "final place" result.**

** = see pic:

Question: how is gamepad functionality coming along? this is one i'm really looking forward to. and, Rumble Pad support!? that's tops on my wish list, but i can live without it

keep up the good work and thanks, again, for the update!

I thought I responded to this . Great game, I really enjoyed it! While I had a little difficulty telling where the walls were on that grey bridge (the walls and road were the same texture), the game was quite fun! Perhaps you could tile the texture on the road a little more so it doesn't look so stretched? Just a thought .

@Virtual Nomad : Im glad you got to test out the new update! Since your last review was excellent!, You've given me some excellent ideas to help me with my game, 1/ The Delay for the reverse signal is definetly needed and il add that in for the next update.
2/Unfortunatley its always slowed down in hill's, its just the way darkphysics works, im not sure if there is a way to not lose acceleration due to hill's and gravity but i will try and see if i can help that.

2a/The im stuck feature is a great idea and something i was thinking of myself, kinda like how they do it in Flatout(if you ever played it), has a reset button to put you back on track if you managed to get stuck.

3/The Final Result should always be correct, the poll position on the left side will always change, because whenever you finish the race your character will 'Turn invisible' and other characters will pass you, making your poll position change, its just a matter of making those sprites invisible when the race ends.

4/The game definetly feels alot better to play with a gamepad, i will make this my first priority for the next update.

Thanks again for your reviews, and i hope you continue to help me out with this because your views and ideas are greatly appreciated.

@sixty squares:Thanks for trying out the game, I think i will put like Racing ad's on the sides of the bridge so you can tell the difference between the road and the sides.
