Hello there,

I'm quite new at this game design business, been on and off it really. I was just wondering, I'm creating a First Person Shooter and was wondering if there was a free program that created - Basic - Levels and sort of exports them into an .X file. I'm guessing this would be the best place to ask?

If not then could you please move it to the relevant forum.

Cheers.

You could do it using Dark Basic, and save it as a .x
Or a 3d modelling program, but or a terrain making program such as Terrain editor...

Thanks, I found a free terrain making program.

I decided to export one of the pre-made maps so I could see what it will look like in DB. It is a .X file and all the textures are there in the file, but I'm guessing I have to enter a certain code to get the textures? I would have thought that they would have automaticaly gone on the model?

Cheers.

Deled 3d is a 3d modeling program that's geared towards designing levels. It also exports very nicely to DirectX that is compatible with DBC.

Enjoy your day.

You might have to load the textures using the LOAD IMAGE command, though I am not exactly sure. If you can find a copy of LithUnWrap (not made anymore, but if you can find an old copy it is free) it is pretty good for skinning models.

If you can look inside the x file, open it with a text editor, look for TextureFilename {
The name of your texture should follow that. Because DBC is based on an old version of direct x (7) , the file type/name should be .bmp and also in the 8.3 format (max of eight characters for the name and 3 characters for the extension) or else you can get hit and miss texturing.

Enjoy your day.

Oh yeah... if you don't find any reference to your texture(s) in the x file, then obviously, your model won't be textured and you could use BN2's suggestion of loading the texture in manually.

Enjoy your day.
