Alright, so I was having a little chat with Toasty on MSN just now... and we got into talking about illumination maps on guns.

I have a nice little theory on how it could be done, but when I got into talking about the way FPSC loads in gun shader textures... I found a cool little trick to make the stock scifi tavor look just awesome.

Here's how to do it:
1) Turn Full Shader Effects ON
2) Go into "Files/gamecore/guns/scifi/tavor" and change the name of "gun_I.dds" to "gun_R.dds"

That's it... that's all you gotta do.

Now, put the tavor into a level, and test the game.

Pick up the tavor and look around. You'll see that the lens on the tavor is now reflective!

(NOTE: This is CUBE MAPPING... this is not true reflection, but it looks awesome anyway!!)

Thanks, chuckie. I thought it made the tavor look 1000x better!

Now that the secret's out, I wonder how long it's going to take before everyone cube maps their weapons?

File-Preferences.And it works with all stock weapons. Its a bit of a problem with guns with hands since the reflection is applied to hands too.

Sweet, what image does it scroll for the cubemap?

@ CG

There's an image that ends in _cube.dds in each stock gun folder.

It's pretty sweet. How does it work? I mean that by looking at the _R (_I) File. All I see is a black square with two white circles...

EDIT: Never mind the two circles indicate the scope textures...

Here's how it works:

The gun_R.tga/dds file is the "reflection map" texture for the BumpCubeReflectAlpha shader. This map "masks" what parts of the texture should have cube mapping and which parts shouldn't. The parts that are pure white will have the cubemap shown and parts taht are pure black will not.

The cubemap is as was mentioned, the gun_cube.dds file. You can make your own, but the one that came with the tavor was nice enough for testing.

Bumping this so more people will see it.

I really hope to see more weapons using this later on.

guys, this cant have a picture, cause you have to see it yourself. It wouldn't even be noticable, cause it dynamically moves. Its hard to explain...

Does this only work with X9? Because I can't find "Turn Full Shader Effects ON" under File-Preferences in X10.

That is likely because X10 always has it turned on.

A photo would look no different than what the weapon normally looks like... and a streamd video has such low quality that you won't be able to see it.

I'm sorry, meteorite, but that's just the way it is.

At everyone else... I'm sorry, but you're too lazy to rename a single file, but are fully capable of clicking a link? Seriously, it probably took you more time to post here asking for a picture than it would have taken you to do it yourself.

Does EVERYONE have a graphics card that is incapable of running Pixel Shader 2.0 or something??

As Ply said, it's a dynamic effect that doesn't show well in screens...

This works excellently with CoZ's weapon shader, pity it doesn't work on dynamic entities though...

How would I go about using this with CoZ's weapon shader? do I simply stick a gun_R map in the same folder?

Yeh, I got the feeling it wasn't, although some of the comments suggested it was possible.

EDIT: Actually, it appears that I was wrong in my assumption, it will indeed work and does look pretty damn good in fact. Just need to copy the gun_cube.dds over.

Does this work in X10? I took a look at the tavor files in X10 and it doesn't have the mentioned cube map file and _I or _R textures..

Also, does it only work with the reflected cubemap image? What I mean is, does it work on the actual environment, or is it limited to the cubemap image? (I'd test it but I'm extremely tired at the moment, will have to wait till tomorrow)

Well, here's a shot using my m40a3 model:

I'm quite pleased, because I was annoyed at the rather flat scope texture. I feel it's all that was really needed to finish the model off.

@Jingle Fett:

Not sure what kind of system FPSCX10 utilizes. In FPSCX9 there's a shader that almost everything uses called "BumpCubeReflectAlpha" and that was the shader that made this work.

I'm not sure how FPSC X10 uses shaders. If it's like DarkShader, it might have a "Use Environment texture", and if not.... I hope Lee's reading this and picks up on the hint.

I was wondering because there was a video on youtube about the cubemapping working on the environment dynamically by putting an invisible cube around the object and the environment would be projected onto that cube, which would in turn apply it to the reflective surface. I heard that feature got nixed from X10 though...

It seems only the images on the cubemap image in X9 get reflected though...which is a bummer because a gun with a mirror on it would make a pretty neat weapon, you could see what's behind you without turning around
