Im wondering if its possible to do this with textures? I can animated GIFs but was wondering to make waves wash up on the shore would I use GIFs or is there a better way to animate this?

you could use a plain, make your matrix with the bits you want above water high up and then place a plain at the water level, i'm not sure you can use gifs as textures but if you can't you just need to retexture the plain every half sec or smething like that

Use the wave equation?

d2z / dt2 = c2 ( (d2/z / dx2) + (d2z / dy2) ) - (u(dz / dt))

(note: the 2s should be in superscript of course)

where

u is the non-negative constant representing the viscosity of the fluid

x is the horizontal axis

z is the vertical axis

d is dot notation

t is the tension acting in a tangential direction

c is velocity; and

y is the third spatial direction
