Ok, if I've got a GeforceMX440 64MB. Basically, a pile of shit. So I was thinking about spending £50 on a bottom of the range SPARKLE GEFORCE FX 5200 128MB.

Is it worth it for the swap, or is that card gonna be crap this time next year?

I think it'll be a little better than the one you have now next year, but not much. I suggest you dish out some more serious money to buy a card, and you won't have to replace it for a while. $128 (£65-75?) bought me a nice card and I know I won't be replacing it for a while!

Well, it seems like the basic steps in the UK are £60 -> £160 -> £300 for low, medium, top of the range GeForceFX's with nothing in between. Basically meaning I get the cheap one, or spend £160 on a decent one.

If you buy a cheap card chances are it will need replacing in a years time. What you have to ask is are the more epensive ones going to take enough extra time to become obsolete to make them worth the cash.

Personally I spend ~£50 every year or so and get along fine. I don't exactly play cutting edge games and value other things much higher than fancy effects when I play so just turn start turning options off if I need speed.

If you wait for the games to get cheap you can wait for the hardware to run them to get cheap.

Then don't get a cheap FX and get a good solid ATI card! You can get a Radeon 9600 Pro Ultimate for $190, which is about £130 I think.
