Dark GDK / Making a Sphere Glow

I have a sphere object that I'm using as a Sun in my simulation but I'm having a little trouble making it glow and give off light.

I tried creating a light and then setting the sphere to be transparent but the light didn't shine out as expected so I'm not sure how to do this.

Can anyone help me get started?

The basic technique is to use a ghosted textured plain in the same position than the sphere, and facing the camera...

The other option would be to use a full screen shader, but for a simple sphere this is overkill.
