3 Dimensional Chat / specular map, bump map, normals, need help!

now, i have no idea what for example an specular map or a bump map is, and i wonder, can u gimme a list of all kind of maps and a short summary about what it is, and if u have time maybe either a link to a tutorial for it or perhaps u could write short summaries about how to do them? iam sure if this thread gets some posts, with lists and stuff it would be helpful for others than me=P

a bump map does what it says it bumps based on the shading usually these are black and white other colors work as well, but im not sure if there's anything special about them.

spec maps are light reflection. i have no idea how to make one i would guess there's a few programs or possibly some photoshop filters.

there's also an alpha map that's black and white its used to carve out areas. like holes in a flag or the grates to a chain link fence.

there's other ones as well but im not exactly sure on the either (like a normal, occlusion maps, etc.)
