I was looking at all of the different 3D modelers earlier today, and I thought to myself, why are they priced the way they are?

Maya is 5000$, while Blender is Free.

3DS Max is 3500$, and AC3D is 79$.

Why are they priced the way they are?

look at their features. maya is an all around model, animation program. including several tools, also an advanced UV editing mode. 3ds max is a much less... developed modeling, animation program then maya, even though its developed(published not sure which) by the same company. max catches the hobbyists while maya gets the big time companies.

ac3d is developed by an unknown(not well known) company because of that its a lower price. (its also newer and likely has less features and more complicated)

now blender is in a completely different category. from the very beginning it was developed to be a free app. it was never intended to be for a price. which is not only why its so well known of but also not as easy to use. and take longer to learn. blender was also created to be a stepping stone for a younger or less interested person(even hobbyists) to play around with or learn with.

It depends entirely on the publishers of the software and the prices they set, in correlation to what the software can do.

Actually that's not true, it began as a commercial app but the company went out of business. The community raised a bunch of money to buy the rights, and then it became open-source.

About prices, I think that the more well known software is more expensive because they can afford to be. A lot of people don't even know about the free or cheap software, and if they do, they assume that being free/cheap means that it's not as good. Your gut reaction towards something that costs $5000 is that it must be really advanced.

It's the same as with big games. The price of a commercial game nowadays is $59.99. However, there are lots of indie games which are more in the range of $10 - $20 which are often far better.

Yeah but Indie games aren't as well known of. A lot of people know about Blender, but yet they shell out a lot of money for a different program that in some cases is a lot worse.

Is there something that I am missing?

Blender, Max, MAya can ALL hold thier own here, i find max to suit me, though i still have half a student licence for maya, i choose max instead.

Each one is unique and has a learning curve. From what ive been told blender has a higher learnng curve, Max has an adavanced uv mapper and modifiers, maya has a sick animating,

so its your choice we cant help you, you wont belive how many of these threads we get, so dont take it personal if the
whole forum dosnt chip in.

cheers cb

note sorry for typos, keyboard broke when i threw it at the monitor,(which also broke) and now am using a crappy rubber flexy one...

I'm not really asking for the "Best 3D modeler" as I already have chosen the program to my liking.

But still thanks for the responce.

Quik what you are talking about are the license agreements, and in most free softwares you can actually sell the things you make.

When you can call yourself the 'industry standard'(Maya), you can set whatever price you want because the big studios can afford it. The kicker is charging $1,000+ each time you come out with an upgraded version.

Where the heck did you get this idea from? Both 3DSM and Maya are fully developed, fully capable programs. 3DSM is used just as much as Maya is in the industry. Game companies seem to favor Maya more, but there are still a large number of companies that use Max as well, not to mention Softimage and others.

If your a student, you can get a $13 month license for ~$99-200
