Hi all, about 6 months ago I decided I was going to leave this forum and not post again until I had something to show. So I went and moved to Hollywood and started studying computer animation at Los Angeles Film School. It's really awesome. Our program director, Bobby Milly (EA, Rockstar, some others) pushes us way hard but it's definitely really beneficial. I put together a little video together on you tube which you can see here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YNbs0W3CG9A

It's really cool, we have a room full of Wacom Centiqs to draw/paint/sculpt on, and a color 3d printer. (aka the most amazing piece of technology I've ever touched) So I'ma just post some pictures here from my classes. To see my animations though you'll have to watch the video.

Bah. I didn't realize how large that TaunTaun image is... I'm sorry XD

[EDIT] and the car picture... gosh is there any way to change the size without reuploading?

I remember you being pretty talented, but this is some very awesome stuff! I especially like the two photoshop drawings, and the UT3 level is awesome as well. Nice job, it's great to have you back. Not much has happened in the last 6 months around here, aside from BiggAdd becoming a mod. Hopefully this place will start to liven up with all the changes he has planned.

(last picture I promise!)

Thanks Andrew! BiggAdd's a mod? That's great! From what I remember he was way helpful to me and no doubt everyone else as well.

Yep, awhile back we had a big flame war in a model request thread and so it was decided that we needed a mod around here, and after several proposals from various candidates BiggAdd was chosen.

Wow, that was an interesting thread indeed. Funny that part of the subject was lack of skilled members on the board. Part of my reason for leaving until I got better was because I felt I didn't have much to contribute.

I reckon I might give out the models/textures for my unreal level. There's no use for em just sitting around on my computer. I've always wanted to make a model pack but never got around to finishing it. Now I essentially have all these models, might as well throw 'em all together. (each object has a fully completed diff, spec, and norm map, plus emissive for some)

A little off topic, anyone know how easy/hard it is to make them fpsc ready?

Good to see ya back The Crazy. Your Photoshop color painting is done very well. I struggled the most with the painting project at college for learning Photoshop. I loved making bizarre and interesting images, but painting with a computer seemed difficult to me.

Its looking good but if I can offer my teo cents... From what I've heard / read going to schools centered towards video games and completely digital work wont get you the good paying jobs. Professional companies look for degrees in Fine Arts and more of the foundational skills instead of people that solely have education in creating game models.

Still good work Crazy. Im sure you'll do well I just think you may have jumped the gun a bit with moving to Hollywood.

like ruccus said. most big time company's (ones in hollywood) would more likely high some one with a degree. but i wish you luck in your search.

and could you shrink the images... (us 15 inchers can't see that...)

I remember that weird game you were trying to make with those mutant dog-hamsters.

Remember those old guys? They made epic renders, I think one of them was called DaVinci, and all they used was MS Paint. Sometimes it's just skill....

Okay, okay, my bad guys. I promise I'll not make decisions about school without consulting you guys I'll be honest I put in two years of researching and this was the best situation for me. I'd just like to respectfully ask that we not run to the conclusion that I made this decision rashly. Thanks for all the support.

A triumphant return indeed! It's great to have you back! I guess this thread answers some questions I had over from the other thread.

Crazy, we definitely need to get to know each other bro. I'm just graduating with my animation degree, and you are off to a superb start over in Hollywood. I'm sure we'll both have some good tips for one another. Plus, a little networking never hurt anyone right? I’ll drop you a line sometime soon from my professional e-mail address, not the one linked here. I check both though.

5 a.m. and I’ve worked through the night. It’s time to sleep!

PS: I'm jealous of your school having those fancy tablet monitors!

EDIT:

Ruccus and Azunaki, degrees are meaningless in this industry. Portfolio, portfolio, portfolio. I'm coming from a more humble background, and don't want to move out of Michigan just yet, so even though it's a specialized degree and is a ton more expensive, I envy the quality of education Crazy is getting at a school like that. He has access to some very bright minds in the industry, has the ability to network extensively with people who are already on the west coast (where most of the game dev jobs are) and has access to better technology and software. Yes, you don't need those schools to get in, but yes, I still think it's better. And it's not locking you as much as you think it is. Sure your degree might say "game" in it, but the skills to make it are still there. You can take 3D to commericals, military, medical, ect. Same thing with programming. Anyway, just my two cents. Don't want to turn this into 'that' sort of thread.

Sid and laz, good to see you guys too! And yeah, Sid, let's definitely keep in touch.

As for the whole degree thing, I looked up the specifics: 14 months, associate in science in computer animation. I reckon I'm just work my arse off and see how that works out My program director offered me a job when I graduate as a lab tech so I can keep helping print and working on my portfolio. Only 55k a year but it's a fair start and I get to keep working with those centiqs!

55k is still very good amount starting out. I take it that you are a younger guy like myself, and that is far better than what I make a year at Wal-mart.

I'm guessing he created a sculpted version for calculating normals.
