If you get DBP, make sure you download the updates, I don't know what version they're shipping at the moment, but there have been some worthwhile updates since original release.
When it comes to shadows, DBP does have a very simple command;
set shadow shading on object_number though most may find that it is actually quite a resource hog, it's just a stencil shadow shader and one update added extra parameters to the command, which gives you more control and thus make it perform much smoother, it gives me an FPS boost.
The command with the extra parameters is below:
SET SHADOW SHADING ON Object Number, Mesh Number, Shadow Range, Use Shader
I tend to put, for example;
set shadow shading on 1,0,300,1 I think those numbers are right, though I've not played with it for a while now.
Also, to add, the shadow shader uses light object '0', which already exists, so if you want to move the shadow source then just move light '0' and you should be fine.
EVOLVED's shadow shaders will give you soft shadows and more recent technology but the code involved can look quite complex at first, but he has a great collection for shaders and they've worth looking at and using.

p.s. this is proberbly the most random yet helpful yet creepyish forum i've ever been on ... I LOVE IT"
He he, random can be fun, the geeks here tend to be more relaxed than other geeks - there's the odd flame, but it's bound to happen.

I'm sure you'll fit right in.
As for the creepy part, that's only because we don't let Grandma out of his cage.
