I'm not sure, we lost the book during the great shoes 80% off sale of '02 with the book in the direct path of several hordes of women. Been improvising since.

Just throw him in the usual locked room with several tempting gadgets and consoles, but no power cords, batteries or wall-sockets of any kind. 3 days should do it.

Righto Grandma, though first things first, is our new guy McGuyver? Perhaps I should ask him.

Sorry N3wton, can I ask you something are you or are you in any shape or form related to McGuyver?

As you probably may well realise, some of us are morons, right Grandma?

Welcome to the looney bin.
You'll have a tough time determining ASL of the people here, but we have one thing in common. We love fruit cake.
Dr. Sep takes care of all of us, and if I'm not in therapy I fill in for him.

You DO have the rubber gloves, right?

Welcome to the forums!

If you're a programmer, you'll find DarkBASIC (either the Professional or Classic versions) to be quite well-suited for just starting out and creating nice games quickly. If you're a more advanced programmer who knows a bit about C++, you'll probably be interested in the DarkGDK, which combines the ease of DarkBASIC Pro with C++.

However, if you're not a programmer and came to just goof off on the forums (like many of us, although the majority here do program a bit), then you may be interested in disregarding my above paragraph and doing something else!

No, we're just messing around. It was more directed towards Grandma.

DBPro is a good beginner's language and is less complex than Leadwerks & C++, but given you're at University studying Computer Sciences I can see how Leadwerks would be more of a benefit to you than DBP.

Yer, i was looking at leadwerks but,
1 - its expensive
2 - it only uses .GMF model format? and thus i'd need to buy more programs
3 - you need a good pc to run it, i mean i could, but lots of my m8s couldnt

so i guess its DBPro, tho, Shadows in DBpro look like they could be a pain

Do you mean casting shadows, or a shadow beneath the player? A forum-goer by the name of Latch helped me out with developing a technique on how to draw a shadow beneath the player, but it's for DarkBASIC, not Pro. However, it would still work quite well!

I don't own DBPro, but I have experimented with the demo enough to know that it's more powerful, much more stable and also more fun to use than DBC. The built-in shadow shading commands do REALLY slow down your programs though, so it's better to just create light maps and cast shadows that way. I must admit I really don't know what I'm talking about, I'm just repeating the many things I've heard about.

Newton, DBP is capable of the same sort of graphics

Just check out shaders for it.

http://evolveduk.googlepages.com/Shaders.html

If you get DBP, make sure you download the updates, I don't know what version they're shipping at the moment, but there have been some worthwhile updates since original release.

When it comes to shadows, DBP does have a very simple command; set shadow shading on object_number though most may find that it is actually quite a resource hog, it's just a stencil shadow shader and one update added extra parameters to the command, which gives you more control and thus make it perform much smoother, it gives me an FPS boost.

The command with the extra parameters is below:

I tend to put, for example; set shadow shading on 1,0,300,1 I think those numbers are right, though I've not played with it for a while now.

Also, to add, the shadow shader uses light object '0', which already exists, so if you want to move the shadow source then just move light '0' and you should be fine.

EVOLVED's shadow shaders will give you soft shadows and more recent technology but the code involved can look quite complex at first, but he has a great collection for shaders and they've worth looking at and using.

He he, random can be fun, the geeks here tend to be more relaxed than other geeks - there's the odd flame, but it's bound to happen. I'm sure you'll fit right in.

As for the creepy part, that's only because we don't let Grandma out of his cage.

The Life of a Flame War

1. First, a group of computer geeks are presented with an issue or piece of information of some kind; it's usually something insignificant, such as whether it should be legal for cats to drive cars.

2. Most often one or more of these geeks is very opinionated on the subject or does not agree with the information presented. He states his opinion in the thread, usually with good intentions.

3. These good intentions are typically ignored by one or more the remaining geeks. They respond in a hostile and immature manner, throwing insults because somebody else disagrees on what the best type of cat is or what clothing cats look the most attractive in. The actual motive behind this attack is not certain, but often lies in the attacker attempting to obtain respect or a higher status, often referred to as "geekiness".

4. At this point it can go one of several ways. Sometimes one of the geeks will rise to the top, victorious because he has displayed the most geekiness over the span of the thread. Sometimes someone will post a picture of a cat wearing a sombrero and the thread will be derailed completely. Occasionally one of the geeks will admit that he was obviously wrong/insane and apologizes. But most often, a moderator (aka a forum overlord taking advantage of their almighty powers) will lock the thread and hand out slaps.

Example:

http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=148697&b=3

That's about all you need to know to survive at TGC! Happy forum-ing!
