So today my new Laptop came in. (ordered it from tiger direct) Ok, TECHNICALLY its refurbished. But hey, its new to me! Stats
I was SO happy when I got home and saw the box sitting at the top of the stairs. I opened it up, let it charge for a while, and booted it up. I was uninstalling some of the included software that I didn't need, and... I GOT A BSOD!!! AHHHHHH!!! RAAAAAAGE!!!
It tried to restart, and it refused to boot up properly, and just it kept BSOD-ing. I tried to do a fresh install of Vista-64 bit, (Which is what it came with) and just it kept BSOD-ing. I googled the error code it kept giving me on the BSOD, and it appeared that a RAM problem was the cause of my frustration.
I called tigerdirect customer support, told them what was happening, and what I suspected the problem to be, and asked if it would void any warranty if I opened it up and looked at the RAM. The guy just told me to call gateway. (they made the laptop, so...)
I called gateway, and it was after their business hours, so I said screw it. I took off the back panel, looked at the RAM chips, and sure enough, there was a 2GB chip manufactured by Samsung, and a 1GB chip made by a company called Hynix.
I took out the 1GN chip, and lo, it works fine! I called back tiger and they said they'd send me free stick of RAM to replace the Hynix one.
Unfortunately, due to the fresh install I did of Vista-64, the drivers for the ATI Radeon card were gone, and my screen was stuck at 800x600! I've since downloaded the drivers, and gotten the resolution back up to 1366x768. (The screen has a 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio, so that's why it has kind of a weird resolution.)
I've installed most of the programs I have on my main machine, and when that's done I'll transfer over all of my music and documents and projects and stuff.
So far, I'm loving this thing. It's missing 1GB of its RAM, and its still blazing though all these installs and transfers. One thing I think is really kinda neat is that I can rotate the display 90 degrees. (the actual display ON the screen, not the screen itself.) I can also flip the display upside down.

Anyway, I just wanted to rant about/show off my laptop.
Anyone else wanna rant about or show off theirs? (I'm sure there are more than a few whose laptops would put mine to shame. But, that's ok.)

Ah, i just ordered a new laptop from newegg, it was $899 with a $50 rebate, and most reviews said that it could play most games (crysis was mentioned alo) on full graphics. It was ordered sunday night, but it just shipped out today. It shipped out close by (apparently the newegg warehouse is about a 2 hour drive away), so hopefully it'll arrive friday! I can't wait! I've never been able to use hardly any shaders in my games (Green gandolf's and evolved's), i can hardly play any games on more that minimum graphics, and i've never got a new computer, ever!

With the laptop, i bought: Mirrors Edge, Crysis 3 game set, The orange box, battlefield 2, and shadowrun. A total of 11 games!!!

The bad part is that finals are coming up... so i'll have to try to play video games and study at the same time...

it has...
320 gig HDD
2.26 GHZ duo core processor
4 gigs DDR2 ram
NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT graphics card

the above text is subject to the words "Probably", "Kinda", and "Not".*

@Roxas .. I want a netbook ..

While we're talking about laptop stories...

the otherday my bag's zipper failed me while I was getting out of my car and my laptop leaped out. It landed on the same corner where the hard drive sits. Lucky for me, hard drive is fine, but it broke my CD-Rom drive. I just have to take it in and it'll be replaces - still warranty

Aha I recently purchased this laptop for my mother:

Quite a kickin' deal if I do say so myself.

At the end of this summer I'm going to purchase a Dell Inspiron 15. But first I might get a cell phone...

I've been looking to get this one, with the "For the Win" package if you click customize on that page. I like the totally unnecessary-but-awesome biometric scanner security option. On its highest setting, if the webcam doesn't see your face in 60 seconds, it locks the mouse and keyboard.

Bah, I would never buy from alienware. They are waaaaay too overpriced for what you are getting, and I don't think the quality of the build is worth that much extra.

@dab:
I was actually looking t that one along with the one I got and one other candidate. I picked the one I got over the one you got for a few reasons:
1) better processor
2) Bigger screen
3) $80 cheaper. (It was on sale when I bought it)
Not to say that the one you got isn't good, I just think the one I got was a better deal. It may have 1GB less RAM and 100GB less HDD space, but I think the cost justifies the minor spec trade-off.
Oh yeah, plus mine has a decent graphics card.

You see, they were purchased for different reasons

This one was for my mother, who deals with artwork, and needs lots of ram for it (Illustrator), and she has several thousands of artwork to store it on before she can move it to her external (it gets too hot being connected 24/7 so she only moves files over when they are no longer needed).

Anyway I'd say yours is great too, just for a different reason

I bought a 13" white Macbook (2.1GHz/1GB) from eBay for <£500 earlier this year, in preparation for uni. I decided my main machine was good enough for power tasks, so the WMB would suffice for browsing and note taking (and had the best screen size + weight + battery life + specs ratio. I would have got a very small netbook or something like that, but my eyesight is terrible and I didn't want to make it worse by straining to look at a very small screen).

As a result, I highly recommend checking out eBay if you're looking for a laptop. Lots of sellers and shops sell either mint condition (but not brand new) laptops for very good prices, or stupid people sell "broken" (Read: Easily/cheaply repaired) laptops for very minuscule prices. So check out eBay before committing to a brand new machine (Or do so in future, because obviously it's too late now)

I got mah laptop in the mail a while ago!

It's awesome. I've been playing crysis, mirror's edge, games i could never have run on my old computer!

I got a seperate wireless adapter cuz the build in one sucked, im on it right now, i'm halfway across the house, and i can't tell the difference between a wired connection. It doesn't even lag at all during skype video chats.

ITS AWESOME

Since I don't want to bother with my own thread...

What do you guys think of the specs on this laptop I'm looking at getting?

XPS M1730
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T8300 (2.4GHz/800Mhz FSB/3MB cache)
Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium Edition SP1, 64-bit
4GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz
17 inch UltraSharp TrueLife Wide-screen WUXGA
NVIDIA® SLI™ Dual GeForce® 8700M GT 512MB GDDR3
250GB 7200rpm SATA Hard Drive Free Fall Sensor
CD / DVD Burner (DVD+/-RW Drive)
High Definition Audio 2.0
Dell Wireless 1395 802.11g Mini Card
85 WHr Lithium Ion Battery (9-cell)
1Yr Ltd Hardware Warranty, InHome Service after Remote Diagnosis
Dell Online Backup 2GB for 1 year
Built-in Bluetooth capability (2.0 EDR)
TOTAL: $1,451.00

The only downside I think is the warranty, which is only for 1 year. It's about $200 more for each additional year.

...at which point they'll declare budget problems and all of the monies are acculmulated into a pot.

Which is then emptied at your local Porsche dealer by the head. What happened at the school just up the road when it needed a new server. It still doesn't have one and therefore it's a pretty lacking technology college because nobody can log in.

500 GB memory,
4 GB ram,
touchscreen,
70 degree angle rotate for screen,
nvidia GeForce 9900,
and ya cool stuff.
( Sorry recited from memory. )
and by the way it's $2,500 for the stuff I want.

My one is pretty damn good, and I didn't even buy it new. Also, learning a new environment is definitely not a bad thing - I mean, we're all programmers. We should be getting outside our comfort zones and learning new OSes etc. all the time, because it's just a useful skill to have (adaptability)

Dunno. He said something about 'in the future every student will their own laptop for school'.

I have no idea what they're thinking, honestly. I said to one of my friends 'What is the first thing you'll put on your laptop net year?' and he instantly answered 'Um... porn... GTA Vice City...'
