I don't use either sketchup or 3ds max, but I do have a 30 day solution for you.

http://www.righthemisphere.com/products/dexp/

This program is called Deep Exploration. It is used for converting files from one format to another. There are dozens and dozens of choices hopefully one would be compatible. There is a 30 day trial you may find a solution.

i use sketchup pro has all the best importer/exporters for my needs

the only reguirements for me is for the program to have one of either .x or .3ds imports and exports.
