Hi everyone! Some of you know me already, and most of you probably do not, as I'm a newcomer to the forum.

I started a new tutorial series for creating low poly next gen characters for your games. I understand that some of you do not use MAX or Zbrush, so for those of you who don't, this may not seem very useful. You must have a working knowledge of MAX preferably, but Zbrush is tricky for some, so I am focusing heavily on that for the newcomers to the app.

The polygon modeling concepts can be used in virtually any 3d package, provided you know how to use them in depth; this includes blender, Milkshape, 3d Canvas, etc..

To view the tutorials, you can just go to my youtube page. http://www.youtube.com/Screenwriter805
or you can go that that play list specificallyhttp://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=2FA44509E3911481

Video 1 (UPLOADED) - The first video is on concept creation and Zsphere body modeling.

Video 2 - (UPLOADED)... The second video covers form sculpting, retopologizing the mesh for better resolution of the face, optimizing the body in MAX, and combining UV MAPS for more space. It's a very important video, because it lays the foundation for the ability to texture without sacrificing precious 1:1 UV SPACE. It was a two hour recording job, so it's going to be a minute before it's up and running.

Video 3 - (UPLOADED) The Third Video shows how I create assets for the model using topology, UV optimization, and MAX modifiers to achieve clean results.

Video 4 - (ULOADED) The fourth video covers upper body sculpting using the clay brush, move brush, magnify brush, and standard brush. Those are the standard brushes I use the most.

Video 5 - (UPLOADED) This video shows the detailing of the model, as well as a common situation to overcome (sometimes, we change the model so much that we no longer need certain portions of it, which means we can have more UV space.. BUT.. Zbrush will not be kind to newly UV'd versions of your model all the time.. in fact, it's best to assume it will not EVER.. even if it may.. why take the chance?), which is projecting all your detail onto a newly uv'd base mesh!

CHARACTER PROGRESS
Below is the poorly illustrated concept art..

Below is a snapshot from Tutorial 3..

Below is a few snapshots from tutorial 4..

Here's the end result of the first half of tutorial 5

Thanks for showing us your work.
I'm sure it will help a lot of folks.

I downloaded the demo of Zbrush, but I can't find the undo button.
Where is the undo button? (I must be overlooking it, but I've hit them all)_
I add or subtract the z too much, then I can't undo the mistake.

Red Eye is right. Ctrl+Z is Undo. and Ctrl+Shift+Z is Redo. You can also go under the Edit tab and click on the buttons there. You could even dock it to the right if you like by clicking on the top left corner icon under the edit tab.

robocrap very nice work on the tutorials. We need more people using ZBrush can't wait till version 4 is released.

Thanks (figures it was something with the 'z' key, right?)
I didn't bother to read any manuals or anything. (you know how we nubs roll)
I might get this thing now that I know it has the undo/redo.

excuse me, RC? I have a few qustions about Z-brush that I'm hoping you can answer for me.

A) is it very hard to get used to, or can you just dive into it straight away?

B) what formats can it export to?

in the name of epic video games, I post this

a) It has a pretty steep learning curve if you are used to conventional windows based apps. A wacom tablet is a MUST. Once you get used to the hotkeys, layout, and strange interfaces.. which there are many of, you can use it very easily. I suppose it comes down to how easily you learn applications.

b) it only exports to OBJ.

Quote: "I'm totally looking forward to a NOTLD game!!!"

Yeah, I am too.
It has been put off, brought back, started over, put on the back burner, and is now under way again.
I have spent more time changing my design than I have building anything though.
And, when I do build something, then I change it again.
I do have the farmhouse done though. lol
I need to take a quarter off from school so I can really work on it, but I keep putting that off too.

The old VHS video tape of the original film that I was going to use for my cutscenes was lost.
So, now I am waiting for replacements in the mail. (hard to find originals)
The film is public domain (here in the US not in Europe), but certain remakes have copyrights because they colorized the film or added a new score or sound effects.
I've been thinking about my cutscense lately, and I am thinking of showing the whole film via cutscenes, rather than edited portions of it.
You would still see it in parts as you progress through the game, but you would see the entire film and not just parts of it.
I thought that might be better for those who have never seen it before.

I did license a song from a musical group that has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. (big deal for my low budget)
But, the song has cursing in it, so it won't be TGC forum friendly.
I'm waiting for written permission to use an image of the groups's lead singer and front man, but I haven't heard anything yet.
I have permission already to use his likeness, but now I need permissions for the individual photos.
Once I get that, then the site will have the image and everyone will then know who the band is.
They have been around from the 1960's and were inducted in to R&R Hall of Fame in the 1990's.
The track I chose for NOTLD is from 1995, so I got the license pretty cheap considering their fame.
I doubt many of you guys will be familiar with the group since alot of you are younger than me, but maybe you'll like it.

I also have a local artist (who is awesome at sketching people) who is sketching a couple of the charatcers (the ones you get to play as) and the cover.
I know that her sketch of the cover will look much better than my cover design cut & trimmed fomr movie stills.

So, even thought the project is a year overdue, I am still trying to get it together, but not in any hurry.
It will probably be a let down for those of you who have been waiting, because I have had very little time to work on it.
So, it won't be the best of the best or anything, just a fan based game based on the original film.

Hey guys, I just finished the second tutorial, and I'm supplying you with the current UV'd Mesh. It's in OBJ Format. Hopefully it will allow you to work along with me a bit.

We not supposed to tell our age on the forums because of preditors and creepos and whatnot, but I think that is only if you are under 18.

Let's put it this way...
I was born when movies were still being made in black and white, so you could use chocolate syrup for blood effects like Romero did in NOTLD.
Buzz & Neil hadn't set foot on the moon yet.
NOTLD was introduced to the public about 5 months before I was.

No, it's just a precaution I think since they are everywhere on the web.

Quote: "Well that certainly explains your very noticeable class"

That has to be sarcasm if you think I have class, but that's okay it's all good.

Thanks for the Zbrush help.
Zbrush's interface is very beginner unfriendly, but I guess I can get the hang of it eventually.
I'll probably buy this thing because I won't have enough time in the 30 trial to get it down pat.

Here is a picture of a character I modded, but not in Zbrush.
I only loaded in there to play around a bit now that I know how to undo.
I am not having much luck though so far.

Does anyone recognoze this guy in the picture???
I only ask becuase the creator of the original mesh gave me permission to modify the mesh, but only if the mod ends up unrecognizable from the original.

lol, i was being sincere, you haven't been rude once.. lol.. though i suppose, assuming I was being sarcastic.. i don't think that counts as rudeness, lol..

UPDATE - VIDEO 2 is ONLINE! The link is on the first post! Hope you find it useful.

UPDATE UPDATE - Video 3 is being processed, and to compliment it, I'm supplying the most recent version of the character in .ZTL format. Hope you can put it to use with the lectures!

What are you not having luck with at the moment? Is there anything I can help with? You should be able to solve most Zbrush problems by looking at my zbrush tutorials. .. I hope.. and any Qs you have that I have not answered are even better, because then I have more material to cover for my subscribers!

Very nice.
I was nodding out waiting for the video to load (slow connection today), but that sneeze woke me up.
Don't forget to eat and stuff between these things.
You are making them faster than I can watch them. (Red Bull gives you wings?)
Just kidding.

Thanks again for letting us watch a pro at work.
These things are great!

I'm just used to the move and zoom thingys being controlled with the mouse without moving over and hitting a button first.
All those buttons are the same color, so I have to read it all each time I use one, because I having memorized their location yet.
If the buttons were in color instead of black and white, then I could find them faster.
I just don't like the interface, just like having to hit edit to undo and redo instead of having buttons right there.
Too many submenus for the basic functions, so its not user friendly much less beginner friendly.
Maybe its just me, but I will keep trying.

Your videos are great but they go so fast I can't see what buttons you use when going from one thing to the other.
Once I get used to where everything is, then it will be a lot easier for me. (we nubs have to hunt for the buttons)

I like zBrush though.
I changed the dog to a female and clipped her tail, but clippling the tail was done in FragMotion.
I couldn't figure out how to delete part of the mesh with the brush tool.
It kept moving it over instead of cutting it away.
I know its my error, but its easier to do some things in the modeling program I am already familiar with.
As time goes by and I learn more about it, then I will probably come to depend more on it and less on the other tools.

do you have a Wacom Tablet? I suggest you get one if you do not, as it will make the sculpting process much easier. as for deleting a portion of the mesh; what you want to do is hold CTRL+SHIFT.. drag around the portion you wish to hide... once you have selected the geometry in question, release SHIFT.. the selection will turn red.. then release the mouse... now to go the GEOMETRY tab on the side and select the button on the lower left.. it should say something like DEL HID.. or something to that effect..

Hope that helps, my friend!! Tutorial 4 is on the way.. but I'm resting at the moment
Quote: "Your videos are great but they go so fast I can't see what buttons you use when going from one thing to the other."

check the Andrew's first seven tutorials playlist.. it covers the basics of Zbrush. It should help you out quite a bit! One of my subscribers sent me the nicest letter. He thanked me for the lessons, as they allowed him to become a finalist in a character creation competition in his country!

It's stuff like that that really makes me happy to share this stuff with you guys! And as you well know, being a newcomer to a software is very temporary! Soon you'll be Zbrushing like there's no tomorrow!!

Yeah, take a break, have some fun (other than modelling), get some sleep, and then go at it again tomorrow.
That gives us time to play around with what you have already done, so we don't fall too far behind.

I'm unable to sleep until a piece is finalized.. I run my self ragged. I have an idea in my brain and I am very restless until I have manifested it in 3d in a recognizable form.. well as recognizable as I see it in my mind.

Let that be a notice to all you indie game developers.. I work hard and never rest.. if you need me let me know!!

your welcome

just wondering, is it possible to sculpt things such as vehicles and guns purely in zBrush, or would u need to use another 3d program, then use zBrush to detail it?

it is possible, but I wouldn't recommend it at all, to be honest. It's more of a detailing application, and when used for modeling, it's best used on organic pieces. But it is possible, yes.

1+ is a term used by some guys I know to say somthing like "good work" or "Brilliant", but they use it because it's a quick alternetive to writing a massive paragraph(s) of info etc...

Basicly its like Text speak for Nice one or Good Job...

Nah. It means, "I agree". Usually with the proceeding post. In context, it should have indicated your agreement with what robocrap said about sticking to organic modeling/detailing in Z-brush.

Seems like the interest in these videos dropped quite a bit, so I'll likely not update the thread any longer. It takes one to two hours a video, and there's no point in making them if the community isn't jazzed, so this is R.C. signing off.

Well the thread isn't on the first page anymore, so I'll give it a little bump and try to get interest started again.

@ Robocrap Do you have a Windows Live Messenger account? I'd like to ask you a few questions...

Alas I do not sir, but I added you to my Yahoo messenger.

Thanks for trying to bump the page, but I thinking only you and a select few are capable of following along. I've been getting a lot of emails asking to create videos for character creation as if it were some sort of half hour job, and it's a but frustrating to work with.

THe links on the first page of this thread still work so if they want to look at the videos, they still can, but I'm not going to waste my time informing them if they don't participate. My thing is, I want to help anyone who is serious about the creation process, not the folks who have the mindset of NOW NOW NOW, ya know?

I'll follow these once I can afford to get the program. I appreciate the effort; modeling is something we all need to learn. Honestly, a weapon modeling tutorial may be better appreciated, but I think that character modeling is something people really need to learn.

EDIT: Sweet! One of my buddies has an old ZBrush Liscense and he quit modeling, but still has a liscense. So he decided to let me use it! So I can finaly follow these tutorials.

Right on friend. My only beef would be the fact that I'm not making it for you guys. I'm just SHOWING you how I make them. So take the videos and make a monster of your own.. with nostrils

Sorry, but I have very little patience for comms or crits unless the person has been asked for them.

If you're talking about me, I use Windows Live. I see you log on sometimes, but you immediately log out. Maybe it's a glitch.

Alright, time to finally start following your basic tuts. I've been busy, so I havent had time to check them out.
