Alright, earlier this week there was a lightning storm. Even though I had a surge protector and the outlet was grounded, somehow my ethernet card got fried. I don't know if it came through the ethernet cable because my router got fried too or it came through the power. Either way I cant the card and even though I'm getting an ethernet > USB cable thing I've decided I need a new machine.

Anyway, I've got a budget of 1200 1500 dollars, and my first question is about the motherboard/processor. I don't know which to go with, 775 pin or 1366 pin.

EDIT 2:

So I hear that 1366 is way more expensive but is there really any performance boost or anything? I'll probably need help with choosing most of the parts so please bear with me.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Sorry I accidently pressed enter and posted before I wanted, I'll finish everything.

I've read that 1366 does offer a significant performance boost, and it's the new technology the way of the future. Then again it is rather expensive, you'll need DDR3 RAM and a decent mobo which can be a little pricey!

Good luck!

Thanks!

So I've looked into the 1366 pinned stuff and I looked up some parts

Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813188039
300 dollars

Processor
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115202&Tpk=i7%20920%20boxed

http://microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0302727

229 dollars

DDR3 ram
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145220

110 dollars

total 640 dollars
that leaves me with another maximum of 860 dollars for
-A video card
-A cd drive
-A case
-(I already have a harddrive)
-a power supply

and that's it right?

So my questions are

Will these parts work together?
Do they look like decent parts?

Thanks again!

I hate to triple post but it has been two days and I have a question.

If the motherboard I am getting is 12 x 9.6 does that mean that my case must be 12 x 9.6 or somewhere around there?

If anyone knows, please answer. Not to whine, but I see other threads like this with many more posts and I don't know why this one is inactive.

Excellent! If I get rid of the mouse, keyboard and speakers I should be under $1500. Thank you very much!

No problem! Let me know how it runs though! I'm going to order those parts as soon as I save up a little more money. I'm also thinking about waiting until October(?) until Windows 7 comes out. I hear some new technologies will be out then too. Even if I don't get newer parts, that still means a price drop on everything. We'll see.

I have one more question. I have not yet ordered but here's the list of stuff I plan on getting. I've already got a harddrive and a CD drive. I'm only at about 900 dollars though with everything on the list, is there anything anyone recommends changing or upgrading?

Mobo - Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD4P ($249.99)
http://microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0309509

Processor - Intel Core i7-920 Retail ($199.99)
http://microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0302727

RAM - Patriot Viper 6gb DDR3 1333 ($95.99)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220369&Tpk=Patriot%20Viper%206GB%20DDR3-1333

Video Card - MSI Radeon HD 4890 OC 1GB ($199.99)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127427&Tpk=MSI%20Radeon%20HD%204890

Case - Antec Solo ($89.99)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129018&Tpk=Antec%20Solo

Power Supply - Seasonic S12 II 380W ($69.99)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151032&Tpk=Seasonic%20S12%20II%20380W

That's a total of $905.94.

So I would just like to know if anyone thinks that I should upgrade anything or change something.

Thanks in advance.

I absolutely recommend this case: Antec P182

You might think it's a bit much for a case, but it is very well designed for keeping your parts cool, the airflow going, and best of all, silent as a mouse. If you buy this case, you pretty much don't have to buy another case ever again. This is one that I would be comfortable with reusing time and time again. It's within your $1500 budget too. The Antec solo is a good choice too. Same company, same fundamental design. I just get giddy when I see the P182. Your choice.

Other than that, even though the guide AND the writer of the guide (I wrote in and asked him about it) say that a 380W power supply is okay, I still am a little weary about it. I had never heard of that before I read that article, so my previous education/instinct says to look at least 600W power supplies. If you do get it though, I am very interested on how it works for you. And if it doesn't, just buy a new PSU. It would still be in your budget lol.

Thanks for the recommendation for the case, I'll check it out...I have the money lol. As for power supply I found this (its actually cheaper than the other one) I don't know if its good it seems to have the same connecters etc as the other one. (Does it look okay?)

Eh, not too impressed by that one. Rosewill is a decent brand, but that particular unit doesn't give me a good vibe. There are many DOA's too it seems.

I was looking at either the Corsair CMPSU-650TX 650W, the ENERMAX PRO82+, or the CORSAIR CMPSU-450VX 450W. If I had the money supply you do, I would choose the first one in the list. It will last you a good while too, probably for two or three more computers.

Corsair is (IMO) the best brand of power supply you can get.
