This may be a little off topic, after all, it isn't DB at all, but this demo shows an awesome use of billboarding and field of view manipulation to increase performance.

I was looking in to creating a CD of tree models. Reason being that most model resource CDs such as this are quite pricey. This one comes in at $795 for the basic package and then an extra $395 if you want to be able to import the trees in to Max!

As a casual developer I'd not pay more than $35 for a model CD!!
