I have read in a few threads about a relationship between monitor refresh rate and Frames per Second (FPS)

I believe that the only effect of increasing the monitor refresh rate was to make the screen "more solid" in appearance, in doing so this adds overhead to the system causing a slowdown of FPS. Is this a correct assumption?

Also with regards to FPS() we are really reporting the potential that the machine can loop at not the real FPS which is a function of the monitor.

As movies run around 24 FPS anything over 60 fps would have no effect on smoothness of animation.

If anyone is truly knowledgeable on this topic I would like to hear the true relationship of FPS and refresh rates.

Someone will correct me if i am wrong but when you update the screen the faster and the smoother things are, when you have more fps in your game the game will run faster and smoother, your right about games not being any smoother when over 60 fps but the game will be faster it is also the same for screen refresh rates i think.

Most card nowdays can run for more than 200fps syncronized... but most monitors only support upto85 or so.
For example, if you set rate to 190fps, and your monitor only supports 85hz, that half of the frames that you r calculating, wont be able to be shown by your monitor---> your program is working as twice as it would be needed.
Am i rigth about this?

And if so, when i put sync rate 0, i get 200fps, or 85?

Usually a game does more than simply redraw the screen each iteration through it's main loop. This non rendering work is still valid.

It depends which mode you're in.

In full screen exclusive you'll get 85 if that's what your monitor is refreshing at.

In Windowed modes however you'll get up to 200. I've had problems setting sync rates in windowed modes to anything other than 60 or 200 fps. eg sync rate 85 or sync rate 150 both give 64 screen fps ??? Must be a bug! Either way any sync rate other than 0 in windowed mode judders as it fails to match up with the 85Hz my monitor is running at.

I've given up on the sync command and now use timers to control game speed. Patch 5 fix maybe??????
