I would like a tutorial on texturing a planet so that the tips are not squashed. I never did figure that out.

I remember a Blender tutorial on how to texture a planet. I'll try and find it and if I do I'll post it.

EDIT: Here it is. http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Blender_3D:_Noob_to_Pro/UV_Map_Basics

That tutorial is quite good, but is there any way to start of with a flat texture?, as that texture was already a sphere.

Can't you just unwrap your sphere and make the texture according to that?

That's a link to make the actual texturing, then using Photoshop you spherize it.

I tried unwrapping, but the texture was pinched at the top.

..And the tutorial creates 2 sides of the planet? Or just 1 side of the planet?

If it's just creating 1 side how do you seamlessly join the two halves together?

This link is the sort of shape that I need to create with Photoshop...

You see the way that it has be designed not to squash up at the ends.

Did you make a new texture according to the UV Map?

I think you are looking for something like this:

From this site:
http://www.richardrosenman.com/

It's a Photoshop filter called the Spherical Mapping Corrector. And it does exactly what you are asking.

Here it is in action:

I'm still doing something wrong because now I have a seam. I think I need a geosphere, do you know where I can get one from?

EDIT: Figured out how to make a geosphere in Anim8or. Now I just have a 2 pixel seam which I can fix.

You have a seam probably because you aren't making your flat texture seamless.

The spherical map corrector won't do that for you.

Yes it is seemless, but not on the planet. I just need to tweak it a bit.

Well the Geosphere wasn't too bad, but didn't have enough divisions, Anim8or only allows 6 divisions, and you end up with a lumpy sphere. So now I need a better Geosphere, and I'm still having problems with seams.
